UPDATE: BOX OFFICE: PROMETHEUS Looks Set To Dominate The Weekend With $68 Million

Despite the majority of analysts predicting that Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted would dominate the North American box office this weekend, it now looks as if Prometheus is set to take the #1 spot. Read on for details.

Deadline reports that Ridley Scott's Prometheus is set to storm the North American box office this weekend with an impressive $26M opening today and a $68M weekend in total. Some analysts are even predicting $70M+. The 3D sci-fi epic took $3.561M at midnight screenings and has so far earned a total of $51M overseas. It was thought that the R-Rated movie would struggle to topple DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, but that is now likely to open with (an equally impressive) $18M Friday and $57M weekend. Read my 5* review of Prometheus by clicking HERE to check it out.

UPDATE: A Fox exec now tells the site, "There is no mathematical scenario I know of that we hit $68M. Even at $26M for today, we get to $66.5M – and there is nothing on this green earth that shows us hitting $26M today. I could see us doing $22M today which would likely get us to $56M." Regardless, there's no getting around the fact that this would still be a fantastic opening for Prometheus.

In the distant future, two superpowers control Earth and fight each other for all the solar system's natural resources. When one side dispatches a team to a distant planet to terraform it for human colonization, the team discovers an indigenous race of bio-mechanoid killers. Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

@Lert- I just got back from seeing it. It's an okay movie. The story is sloppy as hell, but the scope and the acting is superb. If you want to see something at the movies this weekend, check out Prometheus.

Prometheus was just FOX doing a Lucas to create a new franchise out of a dying one so they can make money from we fanboys by selling us more new merchandise. The film is utterly nonsensical, characters do stuff nobody with common sense would chose to do simply to contrive death sequences and by the end of the movie they motion to delve into areas of creationism and Darwinism but don't actually explore anything to do with any of these as if the mere suggestion qualifies the movie for the label "Intelligent Scifi"

But fanboys are like lemmings when it comes to a spectacle so FOX will have their new franchise, new Ripley, new Aliens, new ships and vehicles to make lots of action figures, toys and other merchandise that makes more money for them than the actual movie... suckers!

@tea Success!

Btw, I heard they kind of just add more questions in the film. Did it seem like a set up for future movies in the franchise?

I think it's better to think of it more as a thriller than a horror movie. It's hard to be scared when you know how a lot of the biology works. Where in Alien the chestburster scene is scary as hell... nothing in Prometheus can elicit that same fear when you know the same similar themes and biology is used.

Its a fun watch. I think people expected too much of it answer wise. It's ppen to sequels but doesn't need them at all. Alien left me with just as many questions of "why?" but I didn't feel the need to tear it apart for not answering them.

GiantNerd - 6/8/2012, 5:34 PM
@tea ...well that's kind of upsetting to hear. When I heard they question the origin of life, I was extremely intrigued, but if they did it blindly then it obviously doesn't really mean a whole lot in the series. I sure do hope they find a clever way of explaining and surprising in the future ones.

I heard the visuals are some of the best ever though, so it's a must see for me in theaters.

That kind of pisses me off though. You have to answer some [frick]ing questions. Damn. Lol

Look, people need to stop reviewing this film as an alien movie. I haven't seen it so I'm not saying any of you are wrong. I just see a lot of people complaining because it isn't Alien.

Anyway, Fassbender alone makes this worthy of a watch. Fassbender is one of the best actors in modern cinema and watching him is a pleasure man wasn't meant to see methinks

I saw it at midnight last night, and while I found some characters to be a bit underutilized, the overall experience was very positive. Yes, a lot of questions are left unanswered, but it sparks some cool critical thought of the circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would most likely see it again if given the opportunity.

Idon't want answers. Maybe a few but I definitely want more questions. The mistery is, for me, the best part of the Alien franchise and all the things related to it.

yeahh..i have to agree with Teabag. i mean, i was so psyched to watch this film, but, afterwards..i'm like, "WHAT DA HECK WAS DA POINT OF DA WHOLE DANG MOVIE..??"

While we're curious about the space jockey, we don't really care about their origins..this is more like a SPINOFF rather than a prequel to Alien. we want friggin' ALIENS in our alien movies, darn it!!!

SPOILER!!! i really like that whole c-section scene, though. that's Master Ridley at his best.

This was not a terrible movie, from a technical/visual standpoint it was outstaning. Fassbender was great, however, the massive plot holes, weak storyline, lack of interesting characters and character development. Not to mention the massive plot holes and the films annoyance of introducing interesting ideas/themes but never really having any answers and or attempting to even answer those questions really makes it just an average sci-fi film at best. Disappointing.
