Deadline reports that Ridley Scott's Prometheus is set to storm the North American box office this weekend with an impressive $26M opening today and a $68M weekend in total. Some analysts are even predicting $70M+. The 3D sci-fi epic took $3.561M at midnight screenings and has so far earned a total of $51M overseas. It was thought that the R-Rated movie would struggle to topple DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, but that is now likely to open with (an equally impressive) $18M Friday and $57M weekend. UPDATE: A Fox exec now tells the site, "There is no mathematical scenario I know of that we hit $68M. Even at $26M for today, we get to $66.5M – and there is nothing on this green earth that shows us hitting $26M today. I could see us doing $22M today which would likely get us to $56M." Regardless, there's no getting around the fact that this would still be a fantastic opening for Prometheus.

In the distant future, two superpowers control Earth and fight each other for all the solar system's natural resources. When one side dispatches a team to a distant planet to terraform it for human colonization, the team discovers an indigenous race of bio-mechanoid killers. Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.
