Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is definitely a beautiful movie, with amazing CGI creating a huge sense of wonder. The trailers promise groundbreaking visuals and while it does deliver, how does the actual movie hold up?

With a star studded cast led by Dane Dehaan (The Amazing Spider-man 2, Chronicle) and Cara Delevigne (Suicide Squad) and directed by Luc Beeson (The Fifth Element) this movie looked promising, as well as being the most expensive European and independant film ever made.

The plot of the film was OK to me but it seemed to take to long to get the audience to a point where you were invested in the characters. In addition, the plot seemed to veer off into a different direction not to mention Valerian seemed to slaughter a bunch of aliens, most of whom had not really done anything to them. I thought that part of the film conflicts with tonally with their efforts to later help the other alien race at the end.

The action was a bit difficult to follow. I don't think it was handled very well. Acting wise, Rihanna was atrocious. Just very unemotional in her delivery. Ethan Hawk was also bad. All of the other actors were just OK. I will say as the film progressed it seemed to pick up steam once they focused on the alien race that had been almost destroyed. It ended somewhat strong but not enough to ultimately save the film.
