Critics have been heaping praise on 20th Century Fox's War for the Planet of the Apes for weeks now and starting tonight, fans worldwide will finally get their first taste of the Matt Reeves-directed trilogy capper.

With Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming still going strong, it's expected to be a tight race at the weekend box office. Variety reports that War for the Planet of the Apes is currently tracking for a better-than-solid $60-65 million debut weekend, a number that falls right between the openings of its two predecessors: Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8M) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($72.6M).

However, while reviews and a positive word-of-mouth could help that figure go up, Homecoming is still expected to provide heavy competition after its $117 million domestic launch last week. Even with the typical 50-60% superhero movie drop, the Jon Watts-directed feature would still pull in somewhere betweenI $47M-$59M in its second frame and could repeat as the #1 movie in the world if the adult-oriented Apes underperforms. Either way, it's a good time to be a film fan as after a somewhat disappointing June, July should be full of fireworks as the coming weeks will see the releases of fellow critical darlings: Dunkirk and Atomic Blonde.

It's a little weird that Caesar says in the clips here that he didn't start this war, but at the end of the last movie, doesn't he says that apes did? He said apes started it and the humans won't forgive them. I mean, it's not a total contradiction, but it feels a little off is all I'm saying.

That said, this movie looks incredible. This series is the most surprisingly good bunch of films I can think of. They were supposed to suck. It was supposed to be a dumb idea. And yet here we are... Shows what I know.
