Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu covers the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, and while he's not in-character as the Master of Martial Arts, the mag has also debuted five new official images from the upcoming MCU adventure.
Two of the stills feature the titular hero alongside his friends Katy (Awkwafina) and Jon Jon (Ronny Chieng), and it looks like he'll be going by "Shaun" while living and working in the U.S. Another image shows a young Shang-Chi being trained by his father Wenwu (Tony Leung), and we also have new looks at the mysterious Xialing (Meng'er Zhang) and the villainous Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu).
Liu also spoke to the trade about playing an Asian American hero who happens to be adept at martial arts in the current climate.
"There are two paradigms that are completely at odds with each other," he says. "One being, as a progressive Asian American man, I've always wanted to shatter barriers and expectations of what Asian men are and be very aware of the boxes that we're put into — martial artists, sidekicks, exotic, or Orientalist. And then the other paradigm is, like, kung fu is objectively super f---ing cool. There is a reason why kung fu caught fire and the world became obsessed with it, because it's incredible to watch."
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also stars Michelle Yeoh and Fala Chen. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who also co-wrote the screenplay with David Callahan and Andrew Lanham, the movie is set to be released theatrically on September 3rd, 2021.
