SHANG-CHI Star Simu Liu Reveals Where He Hopes To See The Hero's Story Go Next In Upcoming Sequel

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has revealed his hopes for the hero in the planned sequel, while also revealing why he's so excited about director Destin Daniel Cretton's return.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings exceeded everyone's expectations both critically and commercially last year, singling itself out as one of Marvel Studios' best origin stories. Disney wasted no time in announcing a sequel, and after a mid-credits scene teasing a huge threat to Earth, it feels like the stakes are about to be upped considerably.

We'd bet on the Ten Rings' creators, the Makluans, heading to the planet to retrieve them, and that could have world-ending consequences (they're space dragons, basically).

Talking to Complex Canada, Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu, shared his thoughts on a sequel being in the works. "[What] I really loved was hearing about Destin [Daniel Cretton] coming back. He’s such a critical part of the success of that movie...him coming back means that we get to do it all over again, which is fantastic. And then, seeing all the other stuff that he’s locked in with Disney and Marvel makes me incredibly happy as well. He’s a truly special filmmaker."

Cretton is reportedly developing some sort of Shang-Chi spinoff for Disney+ as well as the movie's sequel, so he certainly appears to be getting comfortable in the MCU. While it's still very early days for all these projects, Liu already has some thoughts on where he wants the hero's story to go next.

"I think just what Shaun decides to do with all this newfound power, you know?" the actor responded when asked what he hopes happens in the sequel. "It kind of consumed his father, consumed Wenwu. I’m curious as to how someone much younger, much more inexperienced, would fare against the rings. Just this idea of all of a sudden being gifted something that’s so powerful but also so dangerous."

"And then the other big question I have is, you know, in what way does Shaun fit in with the rest of the MCU? Who are you going to see? What kind of crazy team-ups? What kinda tie-ins, Easter eggs?" Liu continued. "I’m just as much in the dark and everyone else, so I don’t know anything, but I’m excited to dive into that process."

After his meeting with Captain Marvel, Bruce Banner, and Wong, it already feels like Shang-Chi is part of The Avengers, so the stage is clearly being set for big things for the hero moving forward.

What are you hoping for in the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sequel?

Really hope they don't make him and Katy a couple in the sequel. Their chemistry was really good, but just keep em as friends.

Keep the casting of Chinese acting legends going and bring in Jackie or Sammo

A Disney+ tv show about Wenwu battling throughout history to become the powerful ruler he was nowadays, I'd really watch that.

A Mandarin (jumping through dynasties) show sounds much better than a show about Agatha.

Probably never gonna happen, because Marvel killed off one of their greatest villains after one movie (which happens kinda all the time...).

Sick move, Marvel.

@UXASIS - at least they’re replacing him with a girl, that’s new

I think I was in the minority who didn’t think much of his performance in the film, he was aggressively dull and that was partly due to a lack of characterisation. He was just a… nice lad with a bad dad who knew kung fu. But he was so boring. Thankfully Awkwafina and Tony Leung brought so much charisma it gave the film enough life to make up for the fact that Shang himself wasn’t very interesting. But that’s just me and I understand most people didnt feel that way. Only reason J express that opinion is that I’m so baffled when people say he was ‘born to play’ this role or that he is as iconic to it as Downey to Iron Man. Really? I feel like there are a lot of actors who could have been far more interesting and made the role more memorable and their own.

@connorblaze - Agreed, I think of other great martial artists, Bruce Lee was cool, Jackie Chan was goofy, jet Li was fierce tho I can remember him being goofy a few times, Like I mostly think of Donnie Yen as Ip Man, but on Rogue One he was goofy. It’s so fun when a great martial artist is goofy, buy whatever they did they committed to it. I’ll eat the same for JCVD, Snipes, Seagal, Michael jai, and there’s Tony Jaa, Iko, etc… Simu mostly had this wince.

@connorblaze - I think that's more to do with the way the character was written rather than Simu Lou's acting. He's super charismatic in real life and that really helped make the character feel more interesting to watch during the movie, but I feel like future appearances will probably give him a meatier role.

@connorblaze - He was a bland Everyman, which is the antithesis of Shang-Chi. He needed more presence, and he just didn’t have it. All I see when I look at him is the punkass beta bitch Simu Liu.

@Kurban - think they might’ve been scared of him coming off as a Bruce lee copycat

@ShimmyShimmyYA - That’s exactly what he should have been and they should have owned up to it.

I honestly don’t know where he’d fit in next with the new lineup. It’d have to be a full team up movie I’m guessing. I wouldn’t mind him teaching Spider-Man his style of fighting considering he had his first physical threat in the goblin and got his ass handed to him

@Dannywest - Well, that was the Master of Kung Fu comic, and very fine it was too.

But this is "Best super-hero ever! Can beat the Hulk!" according to the actor. Have any of them even heard of Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy?

My only worry is that having the rings gets in the way of the more intimate and choreographed fights we got. I want more of that and then sure go crazy in the third act but I don’t want him punching people through walls lol

@Ha1frican - I'm almost certain he won't use the rings unless absolutely necessary given his aversion to killing again, how they affected his father, and he's pretty good martial artist.
He did use them for enhanced movement when he got them, so they can still be kept in the movie, if Marvel doesn't want them to be used too sparingly, for CGI parkour scenes to escape or close the distance without using them for the fight itself.

There's 1 thing most of us want and that's: Danny Rand, the Immortal Iron Fist, Protector of K'un-Lun and Sworn Enemy of the Hand (tm)

God please no. If Feige has any creative bones in his body, he will abandon this notion that more is better and give us a personal sequel to Shang Chi. That third act kept that film from being really special, IMO. Less of that, more of the first two acts minus some of the shit gags of course and we got a banger. Let your directors and writers craft stories that aren’t simply about progressing your [frick]ing movie-verse. And Spidey just made a bill so this isn’t gonna stop any time soon because the money is too good. I want a Matt Reeves for the MCU.

I'd never even thought of the "how does he handle this power" angle before. That's actually a nice foundation for a conflict in a sequel if they want to dig into that. I feel like Shang Chi can explore an entire subsection of the MCU in the same ways THOR did, and thankfully it doesn't have as many side characters to keep involved in the story aside from his sister, aunt and Katey. They can pretty much take it anywhere

It's just gonna become another team-up movie to boost the box office.
