Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to hit theaters in most locations this Friday, and updated tracking points to Marvel Studios' latest Phase 4 release making a huge impact at the global box office.
Though accurate predictions are difficult given the current climate, Deadline is reporting that Shang-Chi could take in as much as $45M-$50M in the US and Canada, and $40M+ overseas (the movie has already opened in France, Korea and Italy). This potential $90M+ haul would set a new Labor Day opening weekend record.
Shang-Chi has received an overwhelmingly positive critical reception (it currently sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it's worth noting that critical acclaim didn't make much of a difference to The Suicide Squad's BO performance. Then again, the former has the advantage of a more family-friendly PG-13 rating, and since it won't be available to stream from home, fans will be forced to brave the theater if they want to see the Master of Martial Arts in action.
Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.
Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers.
