SHAZAM Director David F. Sandberg Is Getting Ready For The Inevitable Fan Backlash To His Movie

Comic book fans are known to be (a little) critical of movie adaptations, and Shazam Helmer David F. Sandberg thinks his film will be no exception as he's preparing to face some fan rage...

Director David F. Sandberg was recently announced to helm the much-postponed Shazam movie adaptation. The production has seen its share of controversies, including delays and questions as to whether Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam would feature in the movie or not.

With Johnson now confirmed not to appear, and a release date of April 2019 set, the movie seems to be back on track.

However, Sandberg took to twitter to express his cynicism about fan reaction, stating that no matter what, there will be those who will hate him, and by proxy, the movie.

Check out his tweets below:

Shazam tells the story of Billy Batson, young kid who turns into a demigod whenever he utters the word "Shazam!". The hero's main enemy, Black Adam, is getting his own movie with Dwayne Johnson set to star in the role.

So, do you guys think Shazam is a difficult adaptation and is bound to anger some fans? Make sure to leave your comments below.

@SaxoWolf -

I don't believe for a second that they're gonna
put a hood on him.

tbh

@Griela - How?
Griela
Griela - 10/25/2017, 2:32 PM
@Origame - because that fanboy cares about the hood and thinks he knows everything. Fanboys have opinions about things that don't actually matter. Hood or not it has nothing to do with making the movie good.

@Griela - He literally said he thinks there won't be a hood. He didn't even say an opinion. Just that that's his guess on how it will be designed.

@ScaryCipher - Not that bothered about the hood. it can be taken off and out back on. It's a hood, after all!
I was thinking about what colour they'll make the lightning, since Flash now has the blue speed force lightning.

@xfan320 - Its a DC movie... no matter what he does hes gonna get that reaction. He might as well have fun with it

@xfan320 - Yeah, this just feeds the irrationality of attention whores and victimhood mentality of the actual filmmakers.

When people make a bad movie or even bad decisions about that movie, then they deserve criticism. But there are so many lunatics among the most intense fans (and many of them more obsessed with what amounts to studio politics than the actual films and characters themselves) that the bullshit is becoming par for the course. Or to put another way: people are acting like shit.

Some directors and actors are pansies who can't handle the slightest critique, but the bullshit like twitter campaigns and harassment are an embarrassment to the fandom. People should cut that shit out.

...But also, the filmmakers should just make good movies, too, and don't actively court controversy, which they sometimes do.

@Ha1frican - The hood makes absolutely no sense cutting down on your peripheral vision. BTW, Shazam doesn't have the same vision powers if any that Superman has… Correct?
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 10/27/2017, 11:06 PM
@SpideyQuad - wait so your worried about the logistics of a 12 year kid boy granted magical powers from a wizard in a mystical subway train... and how a hood would affect his peripheral vision.

SpideyQuad
SpideyQuad - 10/28/2017, 8:15 AM
@Ha1frican - No, when you put it that way you are severely twisting my words. I was just merely commenting on how one practical wearing a hood would be while fighting possibly for your life. If the hood lays the on your eyes you lose your peripheral vision, something we rely on a lot but don't usually notice. Just like an abnormally long Cape would work as a disadvantage for the wearer because of tripping issues. But seriously, thanks for trying to make me look bad probably just because you don't agree with me.
SpideyQuad
SpideyQuad - 10/28/2017, 8:16 AM
@Ha1frican - And you still didn't answer my question about Shazam having any vision powers.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 10/28/2017, 11:44 AM
@SpideyQuad - and I was pointing out that trying to apply that kind of logic to a character like Shazam is an exercise in futility because there’s nothing practical about him to begin with. Also you’re missing in gan incredibly major and obvious aspect of the hood... it goes down. If he’s in a fight (and this has happened in the comics as well) or even at rest he doesn’t need to have the hood up and often has it laying down on his shoulders. It’s actually usually only when he first transforms that the hood appears up so no it really wouldn’t affect him even if it did matter that it would which again it doesn’t. As far as his powers other than strength speed and flight they kinda shift from writer to writer much like old school Superman so he very well could but that’s not one of his major abilities no
SpideyQuad
SpideyQuad - 10/28/2017, 3:27 PM
@Ha1frican - Yeah, I realized I was just being lazy and did a Google search. Apparently he has a vast amount of supernatural intuitive powers I was never aware of including "true site", but I'm not entirely sure if that is more like a lie detector than actual vision powers. I've always been fascinated by the character since reading a 70s issue of Superman with Capt. Thunder, a sort of other earth derivative of Capt. Marvel. As far as the hood goes, I think it looks cool and I have absolutely no preference whether he wears one or not in the movie. I was just stating what I thought was obvious, Strictly as devils advocate. On a side note I do hope Superman will play a part in this movie.

Beetleborg
Beetleborg - 10/25/2017, 7:39 AM
@Ha1frican - this would be poetic, Cena vs The Rock on the big screen.

Cena's really come into his own as an actor/comedic actor. He has the talent to be a leading man for this sorta movie, probably will never win awards but if the Rock(acting ability wise) can do it, he can.

Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 10/25/2017, 7:42 AM
@Beetleborg - Right? It actually makes alot of sense. Look im not saying the guy should be reciting shakespeare but if theres anyone that fits the role of a twelve year old boy with the body of a god who ends up fighting the Rock i mean theres really noone that fits that better
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 10/25/2017, 7:43 AM
@Beetleborg - also props on the name i loved that show as a kid lol

And the hood is the least of fan's concerns lol. As a general fan/audience member here are the requirements:

1) Make the movie FUN with the tone of a dark kids film like Harry Potter or The Pagemaster telling the origin story of Billy getting his powers, NO VILLAINS IF YOU DON'T USE BLACK ADAM!

2) Get the colors of Shazam right and BRIGHT (RED, WHITE, GOLD) and make sure it FITS RIGHT

3) Put a BIG, FAT LIGHTNING BOLT on the front

4) and most importantly TWO REALLY GOOD ACTORS of completely different ages that look basically the same (bonus for the kid being really young and Shazam being really buff)

DONE

Ha1frican - 10/25/2017, 6:59 AM
@xfan320 - I like what youre saying mostly but 2 things. One "NO VILLAINS IF YOU DONT USE BLACK ADAM"... what lol so you want a feature length superhero with no antagonist that seems a bit odd, and 2 id push back on the "TWO REALY GOOD ACTORS BIT" you do need one really good one for Billy in his kid form but as far as Shazam goes a more comedic actor would be better imo. You need a guy that can convincingly be a 12 year old boy with the body of Superman and all the power that comes with that. IDC how amazing the guy is Daniel Day Lewis isnt right for that even if he looked like the hero on the page. I genuinely thought it was silly when people said John Cena for powered up Billy but it actually would work on a few levels. The guy has great comedic timing (he was great in trainwreck, and sisters) and he does have experience working with Dwayne Johnson. Plus he's got the body for it. He's not atop tier actor by any means but he fits the charcater. If Dave Bautista can do Drax I think Cena can do Shazam personally
