SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS' CinemaScore Revealed; Will Struggle To Reach $30 Million This Weekend

Shazam! Fury of the Gods' CinemaScore has been revealed, and those of you hoping it would blast away Black Adam might be in for a surprise. We also have an update on the sequel's opening weekend chances.

This really isn't shaping up to be a good weekend for Shazam! Fury of the Gods

After a disappointing $3.4 million haul on Thursday afternoon/evening, it's become clear that interest in the sequel among moviegoers is muted. That can be blamed on a number of factors, including a poor marketing campaign and the fact this follow-up is being released four years after 2019's Shazam!

Oh, and it probably doesn't help that DC Studios decided to reveal the DCEU will be rebooted six weeks before this movie arrived in theaters (that's a great way to help make DC stand for "Don't Care" in 2023).

Despite that, it appears fans also aren't thrilled by what David F. Sandberg has delivered with his sequel. We've established that critics don't love the movie - it has a 54% score as we write this - and Shazam! Fury of the Gods' CinemaScore is B+, the same as last October's Black Adam.

Ouch.

Justice LeagueSuicide Squad, and Wonder Woman 1984 were given B+ scores and all derided by critics. However, the likes of Harley Quinn: Birds of PreyThe Suicide Squad, and Joker received the same mark, but received positive reviews.

On the Marvel side, Shazam! Fury of the Gods sits alongside VenomThor, and Spider-Man 3.

In terms of box office news, Deadline reports that the sequel was on its way to an $11 million Friday that should help it limp to the $30 million mark. It may exceed expectations or fall beneath them, though it's coming in well below the initial lowball projections of $35 million.

Something tells us we won't be getting a Shazam! 3 from DC Studios, though it's always possible the Big Red Cheese will show up elsewhere as a supporting character.

I saw it, it was okay. The ingredients for a really good movie were there, it just needed more time to cook. It had the heart from the first one at least.

@PlusUltra - “ The ingredients for a really good movie were there, it just needed more time to cook”. So it sucked.

@JobinJ - No. Don’t know how you got that from what I said. It was decent, really good in places. But it didn’t quite hit the highs it could’ve reached for.

@PlusUltra - If every movie isn't the Citizen Kane of cbms then it's the worst thing that's ever happened to ppl on this site lol

Hey, @UncleHarm1, Top Gun Maverick ain't Citizen Kane, but it's a far better sequel, as well as stand-alone movie on its own terms, than Fury Of The Gods. Avatar The Way Of Water isn't Citizen Kane, but it is a far better movie than Fury Of The Gods. The Way Of Water arguably isn't better than Maverick, but it still holds its own, and is a better movie than Fury Of The Gods.

Captain Marvel, aka Billy Batson, is a far better movie than Fury Of The Gods, and Captain Marvel (again, aka Billy Batson) is no Citizen Kane. You don't have to be Citizen Kane to be high quality, or have standards. The first season of the Grant Gustin The Flash - and only the first season - is far from Citizen Kane, but it is leagues beyond Fury Of The Gods.

My post makes it seem like I hate this Captain Marvel sequel. I don't. I don't think it's bad, but "Fury", as well as the first movie, could have been WAY Way better than they were.

And if you disagree, imagine thinking you shouldn't strive to make a D-list villain like Mister Freeze an A-list character just because Mister Freeze was a joke in the comics. Great/good ideas always work, good ideasalways work, and they gave us the Mr. Freeze from the Batman animated series, and gave us a pretty good first Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) movie.

Uncle Harm, I just really take offense to this extreme exaggerating of having to have high, impossible standards that people like you set when you criticize others who say that they were not entertained.

I type at comic book f_ckin' movie for cryin' out loud. Do I look like a snob?

For what it’s worth, it was more enjoyable than Ant-Man 3, and waayyy better than Black Adam.

@PlusUltra - I thought Black Adam was way more entertaining. At least the action was awesome. Shazam tries to do blockbuster stuff on a half of the budget and it shows.

@Spawnnn - Black Adam’s action was definitely more bombastic, I’ll give it that. But despite its smaller budget, Shazam was overall a better movie.

There were like two jokes in the whole movie people laughed about. Also nobody knew who the people in the first post credit scene were. Cringefest.

@Spawnnn - I thought the joke about how it was inappropriate for a 6000 year old god to be smooching a teenager was funny

@Spawnnn - That taste the rainbow line was top tier. The humour was fairly decent tbf.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods not surprise will be a major flop and bomb at the box office. I bet the foreign numbers will be even worse.

I will definitely be missing this at the theaters. I didn't like the first movie at all.

So lets tally up the results here....

Warner Brothers hires James Gunn - one of the few Marvel directors that have yet to make a billion dollar film in the Marvel film universe, producer of the terrible Superman film ripoff Bright Burn, and director of the failed Suicide Squad redo which lost the studio money.

paired with

Peter Saffron the producer of the Shazam franchise! Good to see that meritocracy rules at that studio. Here is the reaction of DC fans the moment they realize they have been had...

@Forthas - So lets tally up the results here ...
Warner Brothers hires James Gunn - a Marvel director with a proven track record, who was able to create Peacemaker and Suicide Squad - two of the best rated DCEU projects yet - while working on other stuff.

paired with

Peter Safran, the producer of Aquaman, the only DCEU movie that earned a billion.
