SHAZAM! Tracking For $145M+ Worldwide Launch After Impressive $5.9M Domestic Haul In Thursday Previews

The positive buzz surrounding Shazam! is seemingly turning into box office results. As reported by Deadline, New Line’s latest DC superhero flick brought in $5.9M in Thursday night previews from the U.S. and Canada. Adding in paid Fandango sneak peeks, the film has already made $9.2 million domestically.

“Lots of late night business pushed Shazam! to higher figures last night from the early $4M+ we first spotted,” Deadline noted. “Imax and premium large format drove 31% of Shazam!‘s business last night. PostTrak was 83% positive with males turning up big.”

Domestically, the film could bring in anywhere between $40 to $55 million, though it’s looking increasingly likely to be at the higher end of that range. While Shazam!’s opening is still likely to come in below that of Aquaman ($67.8M), it’s still a solid haul for a movie featuring a relatively unknown DC superhero.

Deadline compared Shazam! to that of Marvel’s Ant-Man which brought in $6.4M in previews (28% of its $22.6M Friday opening) and went on to enjoy a $57.2M opening weekend.

Shazam! is expected to soar past initial box office estimates and is now tracking for an impressive $145 million-plus worldwide opening weekend.

“A lack of familiarity with the character abroad is not expected to have a major impact. Sources are seeing the international opening in the $100M range with some more aggressive figures up as high as $120M. All in a global blast-off between $145M-$170M."

As previously noted, Shazam! carries a pretty small production cost of around $100 million, so this weekend’s opening should put it in a very good position to turn a profit for the studio.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Shazam! is now playing in theaters and is currently rated "Fresh" with a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

If Aquaman can be mediocre and get a billion, this should make more! I say they release DC movies only in December haha

So, judging by it's performance overseas, it will only do good enough to warrant a sequel.

@MCUKnight11 - you say that.....as if thats not the point of these movies. Smh lol my god

@Bat4romHell - The point of these movies is to make as much profit as possible, that's business 101. No need to get triggered, many of us including @MCUKnight11 believe Shazam deserves better than it's going to get, but that 100% falls on the shoulders of WB with their lack of advertising and extremely poor decision to place Shazam in between Captain Marvel and Endgame with no room to breath.

@LongMayHeReign - The movie was made for like $90 mill. It's going to pull an insane profit by the time it's all said and done.

@LongMayHeReign - oh please its doing fine

small budget + big movie sales= sequel. Thats pretty common knowledge. You guys are exaggerating "it will only do enough to warrant a sequel"...

Whats the point of these superhero movies again??!?!?!?

@CBMFilmJunkie - "It's going to pull an insane profit"

So by this statement I'm guessing when you talk box office you don't know what [frick] you're talking about at all huh?
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 4/5/2019, 11:41 AM
@Bat4romHell - Ok let's talk for a moment, conservatively Shazam cost $140M in total ($90M budget, $50M marketing). Now most people who only look for simple answers would assume that Shazam would only need to make double that number to break even. But unfortunately that's not the case, as for that to happen WB would have to be guaranteed to recoup 50% of the box office WORLDWIDE.

But anyone who truly understands the box office knows that in foreign markets studios only get on average 45% and in multiple countries even less. China for example only gives back anywhere from 15%-25% of box office returns to the studio.

So to be safe a more accurate studio desire for profitability is actually 3x the budget and marketing costs. That would mean Shazam would need between $375M-$425M to break even, and based on it's current lower than expected performance overseas it's still guess work as to whether it can achieve that high end.

Where do you see the exaggeration in us simply talking numbers?

@LongMayHeReign - Its simple math fool. Made for 90 mil, pulls in .. 500 mil? Even 400 mil means it makes a hefty profit. 🤦🏻‍♂️
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 4/5/2019, 3:14 PM
@CBMFilmJunkie - Read my above comment genius there's a lot more that goes into making a profit than just a $90M budget. Are you one of those idiots that thinks the studios get back 100% of the box office? What [frick]ing world are you living in where that actually happens?

Take your head out of the sand open your eyes and learn something for a change or don't if you're to dull but don't for one second act like you know what the hell you are talking about when it comes to box office.
Cbmfilmjunkie
Cbmfilmjunkie - 4/5/2019, 5:36 PM
@LongMayHeReign - Ok first off, stop acting all hard lol. You would never talk like that to my face.

Second off, I'm not an idiot but I know math. It doesn't have to cross a billion to make a profit, like I said it'll make a profit even if it crosses $400 mill, which it more than likely will. It's a character that 80% of the population has never heard of and it doesn’t have the backing of Marvel's name to Catapult it to insane numbers so any profit on a modest budget is a win.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 4/5/2019, 5:56 PM
@CBMFilmJunkie - When the hell did I or anyone for that matter say Shazam had to cross a billion? Most of the people on this site are pulling hard for Shazam (including me) but I won't preach nonsense like you seem to be.

If you look back my initial reply to you was not challenging that Shazam would make profit, it was that YOU said it would pull an "INSANE" profit. I don't know about you but when I think "INSANE" profit I think Deadpool, Infinity War, Aquaman and Venom. Proper word use is key when you are making claims.

And I don't care about how the population didn't know about Shazam because that wouldn't have been an issue had WB not stupidly placed it 3 weeks prior to the biggest movie in the history of cinema to get swallowed up in the hype.

And yes I would say exactly what I said exactly how I said it whether I was standing in front of you or not. I type how I talk, if that offends you then by all means you can block me but I get easily irritated when people act like they know all the facts even tho they don't so do with that what you will.

Its bombing everywhere overseas. It will struggle to reach 60 million in china and 350 ww.

Anyone who tties to spin this into a success is certainly biased. The movie is underperforming.

@KiranSolus - what..? The thing had the third highest opening day in China for WB 😂 why do people say stuff that is so easily disproven.
E4Nigma
E4Nigma - 4/5/2019, 10:42 AM
@KiranSolus -

You sound biased. Shazam's budget is $80-100 million so it's doing pretty good at the box office for a smaller superhero film. The movie already made more than Aquaman in China on opening day.
