SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Star Grace Caroline Currey On Suiting Up As Mary Marvel & Family Dynamic (Exclusive)

Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Grace Caroline Currey reveals what it's been like to suit up in the sequel, sharing new details on what we can expect from her take on the superhero side of Mary.

Shazam! introduced us to a group of foster kids who, thanks to Billy Batson and The Wizard, were imbued with incredible magical powers. By saying the word "Shazam!" they transform into adult superheroes but keep their youthful personalities, making the Shazam Family feel unlike any other team of heroes.

In the 2019 movie, Michelle Borth played the adult Mary Marvel, something many fans argued didn't make sense. The character has always been portrayed as being the same age as her non-super counterpart, and Grace Caroline Currey literally looked perfect for the role.

The upcoming sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, will see Currey suit up, playing both sides of Mary. Talking to us about the Blu-ray release of Fall, the actress revealed what it's been like to don a superhero costume and explore this character in a way the first movie didn't allow her to.

"Oh, it’s such a dream! It’s pretty special. My brother and I, we love comics, and when I first found out about the character, Mary, he was so giddy to show me the comic book and say, ‘Oh man, you look just like her! This role is so meant for.’ Even with casting, Rich Delia showed me them and said, ‘It’s nuts. You’ve got to get this part.’"

"I think getting to play her superhero form and human form has been so sweet," the actress continues in the video above. "I get to be responsible for Mary’s heart and soul in the throughline, not to mention it’s really fun to be in the superhero suit."

We asked Currey if she's discovered a whole new side of Mary and she responded, "Completely! Also, the dynamic of working with the ‘kid cast’ versus the ‘adult cast.’ It was really fun for me to find what that was like."

"Of the adult versions of the characters, I’m the only one that gets to jump between the two, and seeing the connections and similarities was just so fun for me. Just seeing what our adult cast did with their younger parts and vice versa. It really was funny to be the big sister across the board and so fun to get to play with everyone the whole time, bouncing back and forth [Laughs]."

It sounds like Currey had a blast making Shazam! Fury of the Gods, though the same could be said for her experience working on Fall. You can learn more about that by listening to the audio interview above or check back here next week for the full written transcription.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on March 17, 2023. As for Fall, that's now available on Digital and hits Blu-ray and DVD on October 18 from Lionsgate.

Why is Mary Marvel still named Mary Marvel, when Captain Marvel is now officially Shazam?

@dracula - I think he can pull it off as long as he embraces the silly nature of it.

@dracula - Neither was Leslie Nielsen. Thats kind of why the comedy worked so well.

@dracula

Leslie Nielsen wasn’t a comedic actor before Airplane.

@HWestRE420 - no way a reboot could be as edgy and funny as the original, but I’m game to see Neeson give it a shot.

@LandGrizzle - I think its possible to be even more zany and raunchier but lets see what happens. It has good talent behind it so that is a good sign.

Would be cool if in the third movie, for just 1 scene, maybe the final battle, if they suit up all the kids

Slightly off topic, but now I understand why Snyder fans are called a cult. I used to be a Snyderverse fanatic. After seeing the way they've responded to Superman's return in Black Adam is beyond annoying. Snydercult lives on.
