Sony Pictures' Kraven The Hunter movie has added some A-list talent in the form of Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe, who will join Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Kick-Ass) as the titular anti-hero.

THR reports that the Man of Steel actor has signed on for a role in the Spider-Man spinoff, but no details on his character were provided. The trade does mention that "many of the main characters are said to be Kraven’s family members," which could suggest that Crowe will play Sergei Kravinoff's father.

There is also a chance he's been cast as Kraven's half-brother, The Chameleon, as the villain has been heavily rumored to be introduced as the main antagonist. Jodie Turner-Smith (Without Remorse, Queen and Slim) was also said to be in line to play Calypso, but that's yet to be confirmed.

J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier; A Most Violent Year) will direct Kraven from a screenplay from Art Marcum, Matt Holloway (Iron Man; Uncharted) and Richard Wenk (The Equalizer; Jack Reacher: Never Go Back). The movie is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on January 13, 2023.

In addition to playing Superman's father Jor-El in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, Crowe has another SPUMC-adjacent role lined up, as he's set to appear as Zeus in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder this July.

You gotta give it to Sony, they know how to entice top of the line talent for SPUMC.

@MCUKnight11 - That's what I was just thinking actually. I have next to zero interest in a Kraven standalone movie, but this casting is intriguing to me. They might just draw me in after all.

@Shivermetimbers - True. They own spidey stuff only though, so we're going to continue to get "anti-hero" stories. It's mindnumbing...

@Waddles - hey, what do you think of the rumor that Mr ditkovich from the original Spiderman films was originally meant to be a long retired kraven?

@Waddles - spiderman: "please get me out of here. I promise I won't stop your supervillain plans"

Kraven: "if promises were crackers, my daughter would be fat!"

Besides Hobgoblin, Scorpion, Kingpin and Mister negative, who else can they use as villains for the next Spider-man trilogy?

@BlackBeltJones - Smythes and Spider slayers could be interesting. Don't really count Black cat as a villain. Put all of the crime bosses in one movie I say.

@BlackBeltJones - I hate that these pointless spinoffs are limiting the MCU Spider-man creatively.

@MCUKnight11 - The 'Spider Slayer; thing tied in with Scorpion could be cool. Shocker never really got fleshed out....Tarantula would be kinda of funny? Doppleganger would be kinda of far out. You could always include 'The Jury' and have Venom tie into that. Jackal would be neat down the line.Chameleon as well...Actually using the other Symbiotes would be cool too (Lasher, Scream, etc.)

@MCUKnight11 - I don't know what Sony is planning on doing with Kraven, but that should really be a villain for Holland's Spider-Man.

And I want an MCU Ock. Think Peter's knowledge and expectations he has of the variant could lead to some really interesting dynamics.

@MCUKnight11 - Besides those already mentioned [and that's more than enough for a trilogy, IMO] Jackal seems a major omission. Plus the fact that lately the MCU has been making some deep cuts for villains. And they *seem* to be hinting at the chance at Venom in the MCU. If it was me, I'd do a trilogy of

1) Mr. Negative
2) Smythe & Scorpion
3) Jackal/Venom (Gargan)

@MCUKnight11 - I would say Kraven would be perfect but Sony already f*cked that up for all the fans. Especially by casting someone who is already in a major role in the MCU so even a crossover isn’t possible (even if we wanted it, which we don’t!)
