MADAME WEB: Dakota Johnson Appears To Confirm Casting News With Cryptic Social Media Post

Earlier this week, we learned that Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson is in talks to take on the lead role in Madame Web, and the actress now appears to have confirmed the news. Check it out...

On the surface, it may be hard to figure out why Sony Pictures would want to make a Madame Web movie. The character is blind, frail, unable to get out of a chair that keeps her alive, and has only ever really been a relatively unimportant supporting character in Spider-Man's world.

Despite all of that, there's no denying that Madame Web does have potential. In recent years, Marvel Comics has introduced a younger version of the character - a former Spider-Woman called Julia Carpenter - while her connections to the Multiverse could prove crucial for future movies.

Based on what we've seen from Venom and Morbius, Cassandra Webb being reinvented in some way is inevitable. This is evident from the news Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson is in talks to join the movie, and she now appears to have confirmed her casting on Instagram. As you can see, the actress took to the social media website to share a web emoji, so we're guessing the deal is done.

S.J. Clarkson is directing Madame Web from a script by the writing team behind Morbius. There's no word on a release date, though we'd bank on production beginning sometime this year.

Are you excited to see Johnson's take on the character?

Seiously, at least venom and morbius are well known villains with popular stories from the comics, but Madame Web?

Would anyone know who she is without her random appearences in the 90's series, which yeah she wasnt exactly part of the action

Was voice by stan lee's wife that cool

@dracula - I agree,if they do another Spiderverse type movie Madame Web would fit in perfectly.However a movie that doesn't involve all of that is pointless.

@dracula - that is literally the only place I know her from. I’ve never seen her in the comics, just in the 90’s cartoon.

I seriously don’t understand why they aren’t truly taking advantage of this whole variant thing and trying to cast Rosemary Harris.

The first Aunt May could have a variant who is in fact Madame Web.
It would also make the dynamic and relationship between the Peters a bit more complex.

@SatsuiNoJXA - Being 94 years old and not doing much work onscreen in the last 7 years probably has a lot to do with it.

@SatsuiNoJXA - They've made her a young woman in the comics.

@GameOn -

Being 94 didn’t stop her from being on HBOs Search Party and the Undoing this year and last year, did it?

Can we stop acting like actors/actresses shouldn’t be considered for roles cause of their age?

Yeah I know but who wants to see a Young Madame Web without seeing her original form first?

Shit, there are people who are still wondering why we are getting a Madame Web film, period.

@SatsuiNoJXA - Very cool that you found her IMDB page. Go a little further and see that she did one episode of one of those and two episodes of the other. That’s 3 TV episodes in 7 years. Either she’s being crazy selective about roles, or she’s slowing down at her age because acting at 94 isn’t the same as 70, let alone being the lead in a blockbuster superhero film.

MahN166A - 2/6/2022, 12:54 PM
@GameOn -

Thank you, I already noticed those episodes. I wish you had done that sooner to avoid this further discussion of age-ism.

Whether or not she has done 15 roles in 7 years or 3 TV roles in 7 years, nobody dictates an actor’s/actress’s lack of consideration for a role simply due to their age.

Brings it right back to people saying Willem DaFoe should not be cast as the Joker cause he is too old now.
Yet the man demanded he do his own stunts as Green Goblin for NWH. That is just one example.
Mind you, not EVERY senior actor/actress needs to fulfill that SORT OF DEMAND for a role.

But the woman would LITERALLY be sitting in a chair and spitting dialogue for most of a Madame Web film. Its not exactly a huge physical role.

Perhaps Rosemary Harris just wanted to chill out for a bit. Perhaps she doesn’t want to tackle Superhero films anymore? Perhaps her age is a factor? Or perhaps she is selective of the roles she takes, but why would you at first, assume, its “perhaps cause she is 94”?
