There's a lot of intrigue surrounding Madame Web, especially as we don't know which version of the character Dakota Johnson is playing. Set photos have shown her looking an awful lot like Julia Carpenter, though making her the first hero to hold this mantle would be a big departure from the comic books (it's not like that's stopped Sony Pictures before).
Cassandra Webb suffered from a medical condition that caused muscle weakness and loss of sight. The mutant, typically portrayed as an elderly woman, ends up being linked to a life support system that resembles a web.
In these new set photos, we see Johnson and Adam Scott's characters once again dressed as paramedics, though the former seems incredibly distressed. She appears to be looking at her legs, so could this be the moment her neuromuscular disease kicks in and her health starts to decline?
We'd say there's a good chance this is a pivotal moment in Madame Web's origin story, anyway, and it hopefully won't be too long until we learn more about plans for this character.
Cassandra has psychic abilities and frequently uses other heroes to fight her battles, leading to speculation that this movie is actually some sort of female-led team-up. Julia, on the other hand, is a former Spider-Woman who gained Madame Web's powers after the original's death, and she's since played a pivotal role in Peter Parker's life.
Their respective precognitive abilities have proven key in many of Spider-Man's adventures, and they've also assembled various web-slingers from across the Multiverse to battle those who threaten the Web of Life and Destiny.
S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing Madame Web from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The movie is currently expected to swing into theaters on July 7, 2023.
