Cameras are now rolling on Sony Pictures' Madame Web in Boston, and a brief video from the set might just give us a pretty good idea of who Dakota Johnson is actually playing in the movie.

Up until now, it was assumed that Johnson had been cast as Casandra Webb, but the distinctive red jacket the Fifty Shades of Grey actress is wearing here would suggest that she's actually playing the second Madame Web, Julia Carpenter.

In the comics, Carpenter inherited Webb's precognitive abilities - and her blindness - when the latter was killed by Sarah and Ana Kravinoff. Of course, Julia had been an established superhero in her own right prior to this, operating under the mantles of Spider-Woman and Arachne at various points.

We're not sure if this take on the character will follow-suit, but if Johnson is indeed playing Carpenter, it gives the studio plenty of options moving forward, and may support the rumor that this project is actually being developed as a team-up film with the titular hero sharing the spotlight with a number of other female characters.

Whatever the case may be, there doesn't seem to be much anticipation for Madame Web among comic book fans, but the movie has assembled a very impressive cast. Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Adam Scott and Celeste O'Connor all have supporting roles, and there's a lot of speculation that at least some them will be playing heroes/villains from the comics.

S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The movie was recently pushed back by almost three months from July 7 to October 6, 2023.

Oh really? So when they announced she was playing Madame Web and too many people were like she’s too young we others were right to think that just maybe she might be playing the more current Madame Web in the comics who Dakota Johnson is very much age appropriate for? And when people said why are they making a movie about an old lady in chair and we were like well maybe they want to make a Julia Carpenter movie (who is a great character) but can’t call it Spider-woman because they have plans for Jessica Drew we might have been right? It always seemed like the logical way to go. Then again it is Sony who liable to do anything so you can’t hardly blame people for assuming the worst.

Sony is really going all in with this nonsense. I would bet it all on this being bad. It wasn't even good in comics

Never really expected otherwise. Think the movie will start with Webb being murdered, and if they wanna give this universe any sort of connectivity, they have Kraven be the Kravinoff that kills her instead of Ana and Sarah

I'll wait for a trailer before I judge this movie. I'm not one to jump on the pre-hate game (people hating on El Muerto based on an announcement is clown behavior).
I compare Sonys movies to the Ultimate Universe and the MCU to the main Marvel Universe, nothing they do effects each other, so I don't care if Sony wants to make a Aunt May movie, just don't make it part of the MCU please.

so the 2 venom movies were stinkers, but mix the character venom and the actor tom hardy and people are going to watch it..... doesnt make them good movies just something for families and the kids to watch so they are going to make money.

Then we had morbius , a very niche character with an actor nobody really cares for that couldnt decide what it wanted to be , a horror movie or a generic CBM, it failed drastically was panned, and flopped twice at the cinema, this was a movie that wasnt really going to win over anyone, with the horror elements too scary for young kids, to dull for the older generation and nobody cared in between .

Now we are getting these movies that i cant see anyone caring about, we all know kraven is going to be an absolute stinker, and a lot of people only really know him for the last hunt, so without spider-man i see it having even less of a draw .

then we have this...... i accept we can all like different things and one mans trash is anothers treasure, we all have guilty pleasures and tastes in art and the likes ,but i cannot in any way shape or form gather who is genuinly excited for this movie? Or wonder how the studios think this out of any of the other spin-offs or franchise movies think this is going to do well.

Must be absolutely awful doing any exterior filming in Boston this week. We are in the middle of an awful heatwave.

I couldn’t care less, and won’t be watching this shet movie anyway. I just came to say I saw an article where Jamie Lee Curtis says she’s too told to ever get “the call” from Marvel and I thought to myself, SHE would have been a great Madame Web

Not gonna lie, I wasn't aware of the existance of this character until now nor that there was more than just 1 Madame Web.

My interested is growing a little, although with caution.
