15 Reasons Rebooting Spider-Man Is A Really Bad Idea

Sony just announced that they’re discarding Sam Raimi and the entire Spider-Man franchise along with him. Instead they’re starting over, rebooting the whole thing, and putting Peter Parker back in high school. Read the details here and join us in utter incredulity. This could be the worst idea in Hollywood’s long history of worst ideas and here’s a few reasons why:

15.The Original Franchise Is Too Fresh In Our Minds
Throughout the 00s we all loved and flocked to the Spider-Man movies even when they disappointed us, and most of us still remember the best scenes and memorable lines from the first three films. These memories will not be erased just because you tell us it's time for Peter Parker to go back to high school in 2012.

14.Spider-Man Only Worked Because Of Raimi’s Passion For The Character
Raimi was a bizarre choice to handle a movie as expensive as Spider-Man but his childhood affections for the character and understanding of his psychology paid off in one of the smartest superhero movies ever made. No Spider-Man movie will ever again be a passion project in the same way the first two were.

13.Sony Ruined Spider-Man 3 And Now They Have Complete Control
Raimi walked off Spider-Man 4 specifically because Sony was pushing him around the way they did on Spider-Man 3, and now they're free to hire a complete yes-man who will put five villains into the script and get Mary Jane to show her boobs. Movies directed by a studio with dollar signs in their eyes will never, ever be good.

12.There Is Only One Spider-Man And He Is Tobey Maguire
Christopher Nolan could make Christian Bale Batman just six years after George Clooney played him because half a dozen other actors had already played the role. But only one actor has played Spider-Man on film, and while he's still young and fit enough for the part, he's the only one we'll want-- whether we like it or not.

11.Letting Spider-Man 3 Be Raimi’s Last Word Is Cruel
Before he walked away, all signs pointed to Raimi going for a redemption after the studio-tampered disaster that was the third film. Now our lasting memory of Peter Parker will be dancing down the street with slicked-back hair. Is that really what you want, Sony?

10.Drag Me To Hell
Raimi's still got it. Why toss out talent?

9.Please, No More Origin Stories
Sony has already announced they're sending Peter Parker back to high school, where presumably he'll get bitten by the radioactive spider all over again. Not only are we all familiar enough with the character to bypass the origin story entirely, but we're sick of origins in general. The last thing we need is to "meet" Spider-Man all over again, no matter how new the guy playing him is.

8.You’ve Already Used Up Spider-Man’s Best Villains
It might have been the same old Batman up on screen, but we haven’t seen him fight the Scarecrow or Ra’s al Ghul before. Except unlike Batman, Spider-Man’s strength has never been bad guys. Raimi already used up all of Spider-Man’s best villains which means we’ll either be stuck with a reboot in which he fights the same old characters, or a reboot in which he fights someone incredibly lame.

7.They’ll Never Be Able To Get The Same Quality Actors
From casting Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin to Thomas Haden Church as Sandman, Raimi made unconventional choices for the actors playing his villains, and was going for it again with John Malkovich as the Vulture in Spidey 4. How much do you want to bet that the reboot features "Glowering Villain #2" from Central Casting just to save a few bucks?

6.Revenge Isn’t A Good Reason To Make A Movie
You’re not fooling anyone. There’s only one reason you’re rebooting this franchise and that’s revenge. You could have made another sequel without Raimi but he pissed you off, and now you’re trying to show him what happens to people who refuse to do your bidding by replacing his entire franchise with a new franchise that rehashes everything we’ve already seen. Sony, you’re a movie studio, not a petulant child. Revenge is a great motive for super villains, but it’s a shitty reason to put something on screen.

5.The Hulk Law Of Diminishing Returns
When Universal rebooted Hulk only five years after Ang Lee did it, The Incredible Hulk earned better reviews and was better received by almost everyone who saw it. Unfortunately, it still failed to build on the first movie’s box office take… because everyone had already seen it the first time around. You’re in a far worse position here. At least people hated Hulk and were ready to see someone else try it. Spider-Man is the most popular superhero franchise ever. You’re screwed.

4.The Batman Reboot Only Worked Because The Series Had Imploded
Say what you will about Spider-Man 3, but it is no Batman & Robin. You only get away with a full-on series reboot when the original has become so ridiculous or outdated that it can't go forward. Venom aside, Spider-Man was nowhere close.

3.The First Spider-Man Is Still Relevant
Spider-Man worked because it tapped into the psyche of America’s kids, gave someone they could identify with, and let them imagine themselves in Peter Parker’s shoes. Now, only eight years later, a lot of the kids who loved the first one are… well… still kids. If they were in junior high they're now in high school. If they were teenagers, well I guess they’re in college. The first movie is still relevant to the younger generation we presume you’re trying to reach, by making Spidey a kid again. They still remember the first movie. They still relate to it. They don’t need you to relate to them again.

2.Spider-Man Is Still Cutting Edge
I guess you could shoot it in 3D, but barring that the original Spider-Man movie is still cutting edge, the second and third ones even more so. You’re not rebooting it because the original movie looks dated, because it doesn’t. So… what do you have to gain here? You’ve already told this story and you can’t really do much to top the first film’s special effects. What’s the point?

1.Peter Parker Isn’t Dick Clark
There’s so much more to explore in Peter Parker’s world, it seems ridiculous to freeze him in time as some sort of eternal teenager. We were just getting to know him. His story isn’t over. Peter only works, and feels real because with each movie he as a person. Now you’re stunting him, trapping him as the same gawky teenager when all really want is to know what happens next. Now, for Peter Parker, there is no next.

I say us CBM users protest this reboot and get our Rami and Maguire back and for you @leee777 demand our lizard and kraven!

reboot this crap fest so we see sexier leading ladies, more doc ock,the kraven/lizard story, and the venom/carnage story. man if they keep closer to the comics it could be way better. just get a director that thinks more like bryan singer, louis lettier, or chris nolan.and do not use crappy @$$ villains like vulture, sandman, and wait to use the green goblin. but hell yeah remake this crap then lets see lizard, doc ock,and the symbiotes.scorpion, and mysterio could be used as well as side villains that spidey handles pretty quickly make a new trilogy please.

I just wanna' see a good Spidey story on the big screen. I really dont care if its a reboot or not. I just wish Sony would make up their minds and get their shit straight! I'll keep an open mind for the reboot.

This franchise certainly doesn't need rebooting. They do need to recast the two leads with younger actors, though.Everyone else can stay.

to bad hulk2099 cuz if they went on in the current franchise, any storyline would suck becuz they screwed the franchise with spiderman 3. they killed off harry, butchered venom, let alone tobey didnt make a good peter parker regardless of the first 2 movies. saying that they used up all ogf spidey's best villains is retarded. lizard, craven, carnage, kingpin (which they couldnt use), electro, hobgoblin, vulture (lol, irony), mysterio, chameleon!

I agree with you Hulk. Your reasons seem well thought out. I love the first two Spider-Man movies and don't hate the last one. I'm not that hard to please when it comes to movies and would probably like the new movie anyway but, given the choice, I would like to see a proper conclusion to Raimi's film series.

15. Eh, I guess I can agree. But, the reboot (if it does happen) will probably be out around 2012 if everything goes according to plan, that would be a 5 year difference between SM 3 and the reboot. There was a 5 year difference between Hulk and TIH, and, for the most part, we loved TIH.

14. So, you're saying there isn't any other director with a passion for Spidey? That's illogical.

13. Perhaps, but it isn't set in stone that that's going to happen. They could get a very talented director and give him control, like WB did with Chris Nolan, even after the atrocity known as Batman and Robin, which I would say put WB in a worse situation than Sony.

12. There were people who didn't like Tobey, you're assuming that everyone shares your opinion on him.

11. Maybe, but they could do a killer reboot to wash the stench of SM 3 away.

10. Don't get it.

9. We don't have any knowledge on the direction Sony is taking the reboot. We can't assume that they'll redo the origin, because we have nothing to assume from.

8. Haven't seen Kraven or Lizard, Electro, Mysterio, Hobgoblin, etc.

7. Ralph Fiennes as Norman, Oliver Platt as Ock, Ryan Gosling as Harry, and Adam Baldwin as Sandman. There are plenty of quality actors out there left to choose from.

6. You're not inside the heads of Sony execs, so you can't assume they're doing the movie purely for revenge.

5. Spider-Man 3 received a lot of hate. And Spider-Man is an incredibly popular character with the public, people will still go to see it even if it's a reboot.

4. Eh, I guess.

3. I guess.

2. I don't get this. They can't reboot the story, but they can reboot the effects? Doesn't make sense to me.

1. Maybe, but Tobey was getting a little old.

the news of a reboot is bittersweet in my eyes.
i have invested myself in the Spider-man films for the past eight years. i'm 18. i have loved these movies since i was in fifth grade. they played a huge part in my life. and i am saddened to see Mr. Raimi walk out (more likely SHOVED out) of a still thriving franchise.
i was even hoping Petey could become a high school teacher in numero 4.
but alas, it is not to be.

but on the other hand, this gives Sony and Marvel a chance to correct some errors in the films. Gwen Stacy should be first. of course. a scarier Venom. stop killing off the villains. a better actor to play the Web Head. but that's about where it stops.

i'm sure Raimi wasn't the only factor in Sony's hasty choice to conform to the new fad of rebooting movies. The Spectacular Spider-man, an animated series interpretation of our beloved Web Slinger, probably inspired Sony to go back to high school.

i just know that if this rumor turns out to be true, then i'll have to clear a space for the new by 86ing the old. That's 3 novelizations, 3 DVDs, 2 games, and 1 sticker i've had up on my movie shelf for a few years.

it's depressing tht Sony is destroying a part of my childhood but maybe they might do a good job.
But I will never forget the year of 2002 and the day that Sam Raimi showed you don't need leather to have a successful Comic Book Movie.
Wadey Out.

Some very good points, the trilogy had some of the best castings for villans out of any cbm. Just hope they use new villans like electro, lizard, shocker, or rhino. Hope this news today doesn't affect development of the Venom film.

Iron: Of course I'd rather see a Spidey film done by Marvel. But, that isn't happening, so we're left with Sony. They could f*ck it up, just like any studio could. But, it's not set in stone at all that they will take full control over it, they could just as well give the director control. I'm just saying it's not logical to dismiss it right away when we have no idea what direction they're going in or how they will handle the reboot.

@LEEE777 they did great on the first 2 movies what makes you think this one will be any different its just another shot to redo the first one which almost all of us loved. It wasn't all sonys fault that spidey 3 sucked nor was it all raimis it was a team effort

deraj36 - 1/11/2010, 7:21 PM
I 100% agree with the article.

I don't want a reboot at all. There are so many things about a reboot that make me sad. Like how Dylan Baker never got his chance to be the Lizard.

However, there is a big advantage to a reboot.

- Go at a faster pace. In the movies and in time itself. Spider-man 1 and 2 each only had one villain. Spider-man 3 with three villains. Kind of overkill.
Have an average of 2 villains per movie. There are so many villains.
This also applies to time. By 2012 (presumably when this will come out) we will only have had 3 Spider-man moies. 3 movies in 10 years. I guess that's not terrible, but the actors get older, and interest is lost. Two year intervals work. And shooting side-by-side is great.

Phinehas
Phinehas - 1/11/2010, 7:21 PM
Yeah, its like Sony doesn't have the rep FOX does for screwing up a Marvel movie. What's the problem? What if they improve upon (which I believe they will) what Raimi did? They have to. It will be a more fluid story that develops him in the action and verbal wit that was lacking in the other movies.

If you were Marvel right now, wouldnt you turn around and say "Hey Sony! You've just lost your director and all your recognisable cast from the first Trilogy... Here's a quarter of our earnings from Iron Man 2 (250 Mill - and thats if we each only see it 3 times... which we will see it more), give us back Spidey's rights"....

Then Marvel would make another Billion at the box office after they make a PROPER Spiderman movie...

@1chris2.....Bryan singer!? Your kidding right? The man who gave us the crap that was supposed to be X-men? He has NO TALENT when compared to Sam Raimi.

I'm with you Hulk! NO REBOOT!!!

Spider-man 1 was a good movie, spider-man 2 was excellent, both of these were Sam Raimi's vision. Spider-man 3 was Sony's vision. So for all those who diss Mr. Raimi for SM3 lay off, the guy gave us 2 great Spidey films.

I could have gotten past every thing else in those spidey films except the depictions of alot of the main characters. That was probably the biggest flaw of those films (Humorless Spidey, B*tchy Mary Jane, Kind Sandman, Eric Foreman Venom, Controlled Doc Ock). I Hope that in a reboot, they can fix up on that. And while those spidey films are fresh in are minds, They are still flawed and can be improved by a reboot.
