Julie Taymor's big broadway production "Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark" just got a little more interesting. According to the New York Post, Alan Cumming is in talks to play the Green Goblin! Cumming, of course, played Nightcrawler in another Marvel production, X2: X-Men United:

JULIE Taymor has cast forth her $40 million "Spider- Man" net and hauled in -- Alan Cumming.

The actor, who won a Tony in 1999 for his memorable turn as the emcee in "Cabaret," is in negotiations to play the Green Goblin in Taymor's new musical, or "circus rock 'n' roll drama," as she calls it.

Whatever it is, it's thought to be the most expensive thing in Broadway history.

Cumming was spotted last week at a production meeting, checking out Eiko Ishioka's imaginative costume designs.

"Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark" opens on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Broadway's Hilton Theatre, 213 West 42nd Street. Preview performances begin Saturday, January 16, 2010. U2's Bono and The Edge are creating new music and lyrics for the show.

Eiko Ishioka is a Goddess! Love everything she does! I thought this Spiderman idea was laughable but if shes attached, at least the costumes will be superb.

I expect the voice to be reminiscent of the classic Goblin from the FOX Kids cartoon.
To this day when I see an animated Spider-Man show I expect to hear Christopher Daniel Barnes as Peter Parker.
Non the less I hope the high wire theatrical version of my personal favorite comic book and movie (Minus Willem Dafoe's eerie chuckle and Tobey Maguire's "Emo influenced" dance off.)does very well.

Betty- right on the nail. Eiko Ishioka is amazing. She will the right touch to Taymor. Julie Taymor did a beautiful job with Across the Universe and Frida. SO much color and the wardrobe was superior. I'm anxious to see some costumes now. They have def made me think twice about a web slinging musical.

He was great as Nightcrawler, I'm sure he'll do fine as this...they should definitely bring the Alan Cumming Nightcrawler back to screen

I still think it's really sad that they are even going through with this crap. I guess on the plus side if it's a huge success when they do the Wolverine musical Hugh can still play Wolverine.
