During last year's CinemaCon, Sony Pictures made no mention of Spider-Man 4, but did announce Venom 3 and El Muerto.
The former wasn't a shock after the success of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, though fans were hoping for something a little more exciting than plans for a movie starring an incredibly obscure Spider-Man villain.
Based on what we've heard, Sony gave popular rapper and aspiring actor Bad Bunny his pick of characters from their Spider-Man Universe and he decided to take a crack at bringing El Muerto to life. Given his love of pro wrestling, that's not overly surprising, especially as he's competed at WrestleMania for WWE.
In fact, Bad Bunny will host WWE Backlash in Puerto Rico this May where he's expected to team with Rey Mysterio to battle Dominik Mysterio and Damian Priest (you'll want to stay tuned to TheRingReport.com for news about that).
In a recent TIME profile about the rapper, the site noted: "[Bad Bunny] feigned confusion when asked about the movie and said that no filming had yet taken place. [His] publicist said that the movie was 'at a standstill,' and later clarified that it’s 'in development.'"
That doesn't sound overly promising.
We're guessing this is one of those projects announced on a whim that, while not cancelled, is no longer a priority for any number of reasons. The fact Bad Bunny is so busy likely doesn't help matters and there's clearly no way El Muerto will meet its planned January 12, 2024 release date.
While the character briefly tussled with Spider-Man in the squared circle, his main foe is El Dorado, a supernatural being who is responsible for granting his family these supernatural abilities. If Armas does board the project, here's hoping she isn't relegated to "love interest."
Jonás Cuarón is supposed to be directing the movie based on a screenplay by Garreth Dunnet-Alcocer.
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
