CinemaCon is now underway, and Sony Pictures has just announced its latest SPUMC movie: El Muerto!
The Spider-Man adjacent spinoff will star Latin Grammy winner and platinum-selling recording artist Bad Bunny as superpowered Luchador Juan Carlos Sanchez. The character only made a few appearances in the comic books, but the studio evidently decided to expand on his history in order to accommodate Bad Bunny, who was searching for the "right superhero property for himself."
El Muerto will be the first Latino superhero to headline his own movie in Sony's Marvel Universe. Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter and Spider-Woman are also in the works, and we're hearing more will be announced soon - maybe even during this very presentation.
Bad Bunny, aka Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is set to make his acting debut in the upcoming Bullet Train, and also has some wrestling experience having competed in two high-profile matches in WWE.
This is certainly an unusual choice of character to lead his own standalone film, but fans are used to Sony Pictures making odd decisions at this stage. Maybe there's still hope for that solo Aunt May movie?
A third Venom movie was also confirmed to be in development, while Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 2 has been officially titled Beyond the Spider-Verse.
El Muerto is currently set to hit theaters on January 12, 2024.
