BOX OFFICE: Will WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Beat SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING This Weekend?

Just one week after the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, another blockbuster is hitting theaters in the form of War for the Planet of the Apes. Will Caesar steal the top spot from the wall-crawler?

There's going to be a war at the North American box office this weekend and it's not just the one between humans and apes! War for the Planet of the Apes is released on Friday and it will be going head to head with Spider-Man: Homecoming during its second weekend of release. Right now, it seems the outcome is too close to call but THR believes that the wall-crawler will ultimately come out on top.

It depends on a number of factors, though, because while tracking is pointing to a $55+ million debut for War for the Planet of the Apes, it appears as if Spider-Man: Homecoming is taking aim at $58.5 million assuming it falls by only 50%. If it declines by 55%, the reboot is likely to drop down to #2.

So, a close race then but one which should be very exciting to follow! Both movies are critically acclaimed and Spider-Man: Homecoming proved last weekend that a movie can easily exceed expectations when the reviews and word of mouth are good enough. The Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures release is going to have a great second weekend whatever happens so Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal probably aren't too worried! Which movie will you guys be watching? As always, let us know below.

Saw Apes last night... oh boy THAT was a tearjerker. Perfect end to a great trilogy, by it is definitely more drama than it is action, but it makes it stand out among the three films.

Apes probably will, as it deserves it just as much as Spider-Man did

One bummer about big releases coming out so close together is that multiplexes -- which usually only have one theater dedicated to each premium format (IMAX, Dolby Atmos) -- have to bump movies only a week or two old from those screens to make way for the new ones.

I saw SPIDER-MAN at a standard theater last weekend because I was out of town and my options were limited. I was hoping to catch it in Dolby Atmos (big screen, rumbling seats) this weekend, but I saw that the movie is already being replaced by WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Not sure if there's a way to remedy this except for theaters to invest in multiple premium format auditoriums, but for now, people who can't make it to the movies in the first week run the risk of limiting their viewing options.

@NoAssemblyReqd - I love the APES movies, btw. But not to the degree where I feel it deserves IMAX or Atmos.
