Well, third time's a charm.
The first batch of reactions for Spider-Man: Homecoming hit the internet last night and for the first time in over a decade, they're incredibly positive with many favorably comparing this latest Jon Watts-directed outing to Sam Raimi's classic trilogy and to the John Hughes-directed hits of the '80s. The Marvel/Sony production is also being described as Marvel's funniest film yet, which should be great news for all longtime fans of the wisecracking wall-crawler.
Tom Holland is universally praised for his performance as titlular web-slinger and as his alter-ego Peter Parker while Academy Award-winner Marisa Tomei and Zendaya also receive a few shoutouts for their pivotal roles. As for the villain, played by Academy Award-nominee Michael Keaton, some are saying his Vulture is the one of the best, if not the best, villains the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen, while others are claiming he's more of the same from Marvel Studios, who have a long-documented history of struggling with creating a memorable main antagonist, save for Loki. It also doesn't sound like Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark has as big of a role as the marketing would suggest, but the part he plays here will seemingly have huge future ramifications for the MCU.
Check out the first wave of reactions below:
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
