The friendly neighborhood wall-crawler is finally back at the top of the box office where he belongs.
Multiple sources are reporting that Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected to win the weekend with a massive $117 million domestic opening from 4,348 locations, which smashes its initial projections of $80M-$100 million. This number could still go up higher, possibly to $120 million, if it holds strong through Sunday. IMAX made up a big chunk of the weekend collection, bringing in $10.6 million of the domestic haul from 392 screens.
Internationally, Homecoming raked in a spectacular $140 million, bringing its current worldwide sum to $257 million after three days, a much-needed victory for Sony Pictures, who spent around $175 million to produce the film in collaboration with Marvel Studios & Columbia Pictures.
The film's domestic opening earns it a spot as Sony's second-highest debut weekend ever, behind Spider-Man 3's monstrous $151.1 million opening in 2007 and ahead of Spider-Man's $114.8 million opening in 2002. However, adjusted for inflation, the Jon Watts-directed feature would rank fourth overall, right behind Raimi's trilogy.
As for the rest of the weekend box office, Universal's Despicable Me 3 finished second with $33.99 million, bringing its worldwide gross to $447.6 million in its second week. Edgar Wright's critical darling Baby Driver sped to another $12.75 million, raising its worldwide box office total to an impressive $70.9 million.
Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman continued its record-breaking run with another $10.1 million, good enough for a fourth-place finish in its sixth frame. The Patty Jenkins-directed blockbuster has now earned over $368.8 million domestic, $745.8 million worldwide and has officially passed David Ayer's Suicide Squad to become the second-highest grosser in the DC Extended Universe. The critically acclaimed film is now on pace to cross at least $800 million by the end of its box office run.
Paramount's Transformers: The Last Knight finished fifth with $6.3 million in its third frame, $118.9 million domestic, and should cross $500 million worldwide by the end of the weekend. While not a terrible performance by any means, the Michael Bay swan song is performing well behind its 2014 predecessor Transformers: Age of Extinction, which is surely a disappointing result for the studio, especially with a Bumblebee-centric spinoff, starring Academy Award-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld, on its way next summer.
Disney Pixar's Cars 3 finished sixth with $5.6 million, bringing its totals to $133 million domestic, $193.7 million worldwide.
Finishing right outside the domestic Top 10 were Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($1.2M weekend, $168.8M domestic, $734M worldwide), Universal's The Mummy ($1.16M weekend, $77.9M domestic, $384.6M worldwide), and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($846K weekend, $385.5M domestic, $857.7M worldwide).
