2023 proved to be quite a mixed bag for comic book movies. It was a busy year, though, which saw a whopping 7 live-action Marvel and DC titles hit theaters, with three from the MCU and four from the DCEU.

Unfortunately, there were more misses than hits. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania was meant to start Phase 5 off but ended the trilogy - and set the stage for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty - with more of a whimper. Next, Shazam! Fury of the Gods failed to live up to its predecessor which saw Zachary Levi vent his frustrations in a social media meltdown.

On the plus side, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a beautiful end to James Gunn's trilogy and stands out as one of Marvel Studios' best movies.

It was all downhill from there, though, as The Flash was nothing if not divisive and far from the "greatest superhero movie ever made." Abysmal VFX, a messy story, and those ghoulis cameos - not to mention that bizarre reshot ending with George Clooney and a CG tooth - all doomed an already troubled project.

Blue Beetle was a hit with critics and fans but failed to make an impact at the box office as moviegoers grew wary of the DC brand. However, despite performing better than expected at the box office, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was a critical flop and has already been largely forgotten.

2023's biggest shocker remains The Marvels. A sequel to the $1 billion 2018 blockbuster Captain Marvel, it will go down in history as Marvel Studios' biggest box office flop; it wasn't a critical disaster like the Ant-Man threequel but it did struggle to strike a chord with fans.

Arguably the year's best superhero movie was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and that's a sentiment you agreed with if these poll results are anything to go by. Thousands of you chimed in to cast your votes and decoded that was by far the best comic book movie to swing into theaters last year.

2024 promises to be another unique year for this genre, with three Sony/Marvel titles and just a single DC Elseworlds title along with Marvel Studios' lone MCU movie, Deadpool 3. Needless to say, we'll be asking for your take on those a little later this year!

You can check out the full results from our 2023 poll below:

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - 47.24%
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - 36.1%
The Flash - 5.93%
The Marvels - 3.15%
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - 2.38%
Blue Beetle - 2.34%
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania - 1.98%
Shazam! Fury of the Gods - 0.89%

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - 36.1%
The Flash - 5.93%"

The drop off between 2nd and 3rd place... ouch.

Poor year for cbms but yea, Blue Beetle should have been 3rd but the results make sense when taking into account how many ppl watched each film - which is a very bad sign for Ant-Man since that was the biggest after Guardians and Spidey at the box office lol. What a troll job of a film that one was.

@WakandanQueen - yeah. I'd say ant man 3 should be higher just based on box office. But that really shows how much that movie soured fans on the multiverse saga.

If any of the below movies were a person’s 2023 favorite, I’ll be questioning their taste from now on:

The Flash - 5.93%
The Marvels - 3.15%
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - 2.38%
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania - 1.98%
Shazam! Fury of the Gods - 0.89%

@mountainman - I enjoyed The Marvels far more than most people, but there really were only two acceptable answers to this poll in terms of "best."

@ptick - Haven’t seen it so I have no personal opinion, but I’d find it quite difficult to believe that it was better than GOTG3 or Spiderverse.

@mountainman - It wasn't.

@ptick - I liked Blue Beetle, but I would have never voted for it as best of 2023. It was a distant 3rd place in my book.

The Flash was my favorite despite its flaws and the lead. I know a lotta people hate on it but I thought it was awesome. Better than The Flash tv show's 3rd-9th seasons.
Blue Beatle was great and my 2nd favorite.
Of course, Spiderman and GotG3 were great and are tied for my 3rd favorite.

Everything else was just not good. Again, just my personal preference.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3 was the best, I would maybe say The Killer as well.

@marvel72 - I was kinda bored watching The Killer. There wasn't really pushing agaunst the protagonist. He could just move about really easily without any stakes or urgency

Godzilla Minus One was the best CBM of 2023.

First two were obvious. And by a large margin.

Then there's the shit. The small potatoes.
I am honesty surprised to see The Flash on top of the dung heap.

But then I think about it and I really don't know which I would put on top. Of the shit ones that is. The floppers. So yeah, I guess Flash.
At least it had Michael Keaton's Batman in it.
(Sasha Calle was dope AF also)

This list doesn't surprise me at all. I only expected Spider-Verse and Guardians to be a bit closer.

Anyway, I don't even remember what movies I watched last year that really stood above the rest. Only Mario really surprised me, but that's because my expectations were really, really low.

There were only really two good CBMs in 2023. Lousy year for the genre salvaged by both Across the Spider-Verse and Guardians 3
