Sony's Animated SPIDER-MAN Movie Adds LUKE CAGE Actor Mahershala Ali And ATLANTA Star Brian Tyree Henry

On the heels of the shocking news that Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been fired from the young Han Solo spinoff after clashing with Kathleen Kennedy, The Tracking Board reports that the duo's animated Spider-Man movie has added two new cast members.

According to the site, Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry will provide the voice of Miles Morales' detective father, Jefferson Davis, while Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Luke Cage) will play Spidey's uncle, Aaron Davis. We had previously heard that Ice-Cube was up for the role of Jefferson, but obviously that didn't pan out.

Bob Persichetti is set to helm the picture, with Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) on board to co-direct. It's been confirmed that this will be a standalone project, and won't be set in the same continuity as the main MCU films.

Written by Phil Lord and executive produced by Lord and Chris Miller, the animated Spider-Man movie is due to open December 21, 2018.

@PantherKing - I wish the Prowler comic had gone on longer than 6 issues.

@Lostcause - It's because I feel like some of these series would have been selling better if Marvel did a one shot to gauge interest from the comic fans or at least eased these characters in other books.

@PantherKing - I thought having Hobie was a great addition to TASM as Pete was everywhere with Parker Industries. Even taking on the mantle of Spider-Man next to Pete in public. I'm glad he is not a clone anymore or the real Hobie is alive. I have a feeling that Spidy and Prowler will toss some fisticuffs in the future,

It'd be cool if this was as successful as Lego Batman. It's nice to see Morales get this spotlight.

@KingNomarch - they better find a great actor to play him or the movie will fall victim to the classic over-the-top villain that kinda sucks, trope.

@ALostCause - He may be a bit young, but Cameron Monaghan was born to play Cletus Kassidy/Carnage.
