Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a gorgeous movie, but it appears the 2018 blockbuster only scratched the surface of Sony's ambitious plans for this franchise.

Talking to Empire Online (via Toonado.comSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer and producer Christopher Miller explained the creative team's desire to up the ante and deliver something unlike anything we've seen before in the sequel.

"The first film was about bringing characters into Miles' dimension," he teases. "This is about Miles heading off into others."

While that first instalment teased alternate realities and different animation styles, the follow-up will spend a significant amount of time in new dimensions. Co-director Joaquim Dos Santos explains, "Each world is a robust place. We’ve essentially made five films in one."

As for which worlds we can look forward to visiting, the site confirms that those will be Spider-Gwen's Earth-65, Spider-Man 2099's Nueva York, Spider-Punk's New London, Spider-Man India's Mumbattan (which can be seen in the still below), and a fifth reality that's currently a secret.

"It goes hard," promises Phil Lord. "The visuals will be jaw-dropping."

If what we see here is any indication, we don't doubt that assessment...

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, after reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence.

However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

While lots of rumours are swirling, in terms of confirmed cast members, the movie will star Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld. Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Jason Schwartzman, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Greta Lee, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, Shea Whigham, and Oscar Isaac.

Written by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and David Callaham, and directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on June 2, 2023.

I hope the fifth reality isn't the rumored New York of Holland's Spider-Man.

That’s sounds a little crammed to me. I hope it doesn’t turn out that way.

Guess he means five movies in terms of visuals, not of story. Or rather, I hope that is what he means. Five stories running concurrently would be a bit much imo

In terms of CBM’s, so he should just stick to what they’re good at and stop making all these so-called spider verse live action movies.
