KRAVEN THE HUNTER Adds CATCH 22 Actor Christopher Abbott As Main Villain, The Foreigner

Well, it looks like Chameleon won't be Kraven the Hunter's big bad after all. Christopher Abbott has joined the cast of Sony Pictures' upcoming movie as "main villain," The Foreigner.

Sony Pictures' Kraven The Hunter movie continues to round out its cast, and the latest addition is Christopher Abbott, who is reportedly set to play the main villain.

According to Deadline, the Catch-22 actor will play The Foreigner. Best known as a foe of Spider-Man, the mysterious mercenary is adept at multiple forms of martial arts and can also induce a 10-second hypnotic trance in someone by making eye contact with them. He's only had a few run-ins with Kraven in the comics, but is a known associate of his half-brother The Chameleon.

Kick-Ass and Avengers: Age of Ultron actor Aaron Taylor Johnson will play Kraven, while Russell Crowe recently joined the cast in an undisclosed role (most likely Kraven's father). Fred Hechinger is on board as The Chameleon, with Ariana DeBose as Calypso, and Alessandro Nivola as another unnamed villain.

It sounds like Mr. Kravinoff is going to have his hands full!

Abbot gained recognition after a supporting role in Girls, before earning acclaim for playing Yossarian in George Clooney's Catch 22 adaptation. He can be seen next in Searchlight’s Poor Things and Apple TV+ anthology series The Crowded Room.

J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier; A Most Violent Year) will direct Kraven from a screenplay from Art Marcum, Matt Holloway (Iron Man; Uncharted) and Richard Wenk (The Equalizer; Jack Reacher: Never Go Back). The movie is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on January 13, 2023.

@suitekid - really good. Unforgettable film. Like a gritty and less sexy version of Inception with the corporate espionage angle and taking over someone via their brain.

@BlackBeltJones - Cronenburg’s have body horror in their blood. Possessor is insanely good, one of my favs from last year. Abbott and Riseborough are excellent

@Cap1 - that family is just oozing with talent. They get body horror like no one else. It’s one of my favorite films ever.

@BlackBeltJones - they get prosthetics like no one gets them. Was so refreshing seeing them again in a modern film with Possessor. Eastern Promises isn’t the usual Cronenburg fodder, but that baths scene is just so visceral n brilliant. They all just get it

I wanna say I couldn't care less... this isn't how you create great works. But then I remember many comics were made just like this.

The publisher has a character and wants to profit off them, so they shop out to writers interested in picking it up and doing whatever they want to try to drive up comic sales on the character. A lot of stuff falls flat and readers don't buy them, but sometimes they get an audience and a fandom grows.

That's not at all different to how Sony is shopping out their Spiderman characters to film makers interested in attempting to make something both interests the film makers and also grows a new fandom.

@ElricReturns - Exactly, and why not? WB just had success with Gunn, so it's just a matter of finding the right director with the right vision. I remember some guy getting tapped to direct Iron Man in 2008. He turned out ok.

Chris Abbott has been great in pretty much anything ive seen him in, especially Black Bear. Great cast and director makes it harder not to be interested.

[frick] here's the thing i don't like solo villain films with no conection to the hero but this Sony universe is crearly building up to some sort of crossover with spidey and Friends so i guess i'll give it a shot?

I wonder if he'll have the Silver Sable connection. Remember SONY was trying to make that Silver Sable/ Black Cat movie for some reason.

I like him in Possessor and he’s been my fan cast for MCU Wolverine. Despite the solid cast, I remain skeptical about this movie or any Sony spin-off. If anything, this movie could put Christopher Abbot on Hollywood’s radar and could land him other big gigs.

I still can’t believe Sony skipped over characters like Black Cat, Silver Sable and Nightwatch to first make a movie about a guy who kills animals for fun. At least half the audience will probably being rooting for The Foreigner.
