Spider-Man: Brand New Day Passes Avatar: The Way Of Water To Become 3rd Highest-Grossing Movie Worldwide

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has comfortably taken third place in the list of highest-grossing movies worldwide, and back in the U.S., breaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens' 11-year record is next.

By JoshWilding - Aug 30, 2026 01:08 PM EST

According to current estimates, Spider-Man: Brand New Day surged past $2.3 billion this weekend, beating Avatar: The Way of Water to become the third-highest-grossing movie worldwide.

As always at this point in the weekend, the numbers are fluctuating, but many analysts appear confident that the wall-crawler's latest solo outing will swing past James Cameron's Avatar sequel today. Worst-case scenario, it'll happen tomorrow morning.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has webbed up over $1.4 billion overseas and more than $891.5 million domestically. Unfortunately for Sony Pictures, Chinese audiences no longer flock to Hollywood blockbusters—it's made $227.4 million there, compared to Avengers: Endgame's $632 million—which means the movie won't ultimately beat the 2019 MCU movie ($2.799 billion) or Avatar's ($2.923 billion) global grosses.

Had it come out 7 or 8 years ago with this level of momentum, Spider-Man: Brand New Day might have become the first movie to crack $3 billion.

Still, the studio has plenty to smile about. In the U.S., the Spider-Man: No Way Home follow-up will hit $900 million by Friday and is now projected to beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing title ever stateside.

Here's how the top 5 looked this weekend:

1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day - $22 million
2. Coyote vs. ACME - $15 million
3. The Odyssey - $14 million
4. Insidious: Out of the Further - $10 million
5. The Dog Stars - $8 million

"It’s a testament to [director] Destin Daniel Cretton, Tom Holland, and [producer] Amy Pascal. And [Sony Pictures chairman] Tom Rothman, for letting us do this four times now — working to bring Spidey to the screen," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously said of Spider-Man: Brand New Day's box office success. "It’s a testament to what Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created all those years ago."

"People can write about changing tastes, but as characters that grow and evolve through the decades, there are none better than the Marvel characters — and none better than Peter Parker," he continued. "When you find an actor like Tom Holland to bring that character to life, it is the magic formula."

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

In our review, we concluded by saying, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day is everything fans could want. Emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, it’s an action-packed love letter to the comics and one of Spidey’s best big-screen adventures. Spider-Man has never been more amazing."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.

This is wild. And I remember in 2019 people were talking about going to rewatch Endgame 6 or 7 times just to try to get it across the 2 billion mark. I genuinely don't think the numbers spidey is doing is from rewatches rather than it just being new watchers curious about the film. He just has that sort of pull on all audiences.

Not as much hopefully.

I actually want the movie to flop hard AF. It's nothing but a cash grab filled with 10000 cameos.

They got scared it would fail so they brought back RDJ to ensure that it makes money

Won't be appealing to anyone.

Avengers Doomsday's Presale Tracking is reportedly 65% ahead of Spider-Man Brand New Day

Avengers Doomsday's advance ticket sales are reportedly running far ahead of the pace set by Spider-Man: Brand New Day, according to a new report cited on the show, and that has everyone rethinking just how big this December could get.

@OneMoreTime - oh yeah, fantastic seeing them together but do you think the writing of BND is the same caliber as Winter Soldier, Spider-Man 2 or The Dark Knight for example?

Loved BND but I think the three listed above are superior

I have a tendency when a new comic book movie is released to over praise it like haha until I sorta calm down a bit and analyse it further
Magus
Magus - 8/30/2026, 6:37 PM
@Snow43214 - if anything I’d say those are over praised aside from Spider-Man 2.

With so many flavours of comic movie nowadays it feels lame to keep demanding Dark Knight, Winter Soldier and Logan be recognized as the best just cause they are the grounded dad movies of the genre.

Have your own opinion and pick something with some flavour. It comes off like boomers and classic rock.
Snow43214
Snow43214 - 8/30/2026, 6:58 PM
@Magus - I often find Hellboy 2 overlooked and The Crow however they are outside DC and Marvel and I tried to keep it in that wheelhouse

I'm dead easily pleased so can stick on any comic book movie tbf so it'd be hard to choose my absolute favourite but I am very very partial to Endgame, GotG V3 and Batman Begins

Matchesz - 8/31/2026, 4:44 AM
@OneMoreTime - Brand New Day fails in writing like everything else thats focuses its writing to set up the next movie. His main villain being missunderstood Jean Grey took a point off the film also the lesson of waiting and wasting years of your life waiting for someone instead of just moving on and growing doesnt really resonate that well

@Snow43214 - SM 4 isn't as great as these movies are, BUT i enjoyed it much more because it isn't so dark.

Spiderman is a character who is always fun and hopeful no matter how bad it is for him.

I left the theater with a joyful smile and that is something that the other movies didn't do.
Even SM 2 - the best one - is a little dark.

I can't understand how a film that, from its second half to the end, is just as mediocre as the first three with Tom Holland, can be so successful. I think the spirit of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, which is evident in the first half, along with the momentum of "No Way Home," helped a lot, but Tom Holland and Garfield alone aren't enough to draw audiences to other films they star in...
