SPIDER-MAN 2: Insomniac Rumored To Be Developing A Video Game Spin-Off Revolving Around VENOM

Spider-Man 2 is just a couple of months away, but there are already rumblings about a spin-off which will shift the spotlight to everyone's favourite alien Symbiote, Venom! Read on for the latest details.

Insomniac Games is in the midst of putting the finishing touches to Spider-Man 2 while also developing a Wolverine game. However, in recent days, there have been rumours about them working on a third AAA title.

A new Ratchet & Clank is a definite possibility, while there are plenty of other great Marvel Comics characters we're sure the developer could blow us all away with (Daredevil instantly springs to mind, as does Moon Knight).

However, GAMINGBible (via GameFragger.com) believes we may be getting a Venom spin-off.

It's worth noting Venom voice actor Tony Todd recently sent speculation into overdrive by Tweeting, "Just booked another significant voiceover for you know who #DevourThis." That may or may not be a reference to everyone's favourite Symbiote, but a Venom game would add up on a number of levels.

In Spider-Man 2, we'll get to take control of Peter Parker as he makes use of the Venom Symbiote's extra abilities. The prevailing theory is that, for at least part of the sequel, we'll actually play as Venom, so Insomniac may already have everything it needs for a spin-off.

There's a chance this is DLC, of course, though we'd bet any Venom game will be akin to the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Miles Morales. That was a much shorter adventure but gave players access to the entirety of New York City and was a showcase for what the PlayStation 5 can do.

If a spin-off like that really is on the way, we wouldn't necessarily expect it to be released until late 2024 or beyond (possibly dropping alongside the next iteration of the PS5). And, if it's a full-blown game, we're likely to be waiting longer than even that.

The synopsis for the game reads, "Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, return for an exciting new adventure in the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise."

"Swing, jump and utilise the new Web Wings to travel across Marvel’s New York, quickly switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to experience different stories and epic new powers, as the iconic villain Venom threatens to destroy their lives, their city and the ones they love."

Spider-Man 2 swings into stores on October 20.

Can I just get a classic turn-based style X-Men RPG, please?

@CorndogBurglar - I would even settle for Midnight Suns gameplay. Just leave that friendship simulator garbage between missions behind.

@CorndogBurglar - I prefer 3rd person AAA action games, and think that would be ideal state for the X-Men. The Wolverine game shows promise.

I’d accept a turn based RPG but wouldn’t be ecstatic. Please no card combat though. It just feels cheap to me.

@CorndogBurglar - Heck I’d even accept a new X-Men legends even though that Diablo style gameplay isn’t my favorite.

I’d say 2nd choice behind AAA would be old school side scroller like the old arcade game or the Super Nintendo and Genesis games.

@mountainman - I like 3rd person action games too. But I feel like it would be tough doing the team dynamic in that style.

Maybe they could do it like Guardians of the Galaxy, but have customizable team. And instead of just playing as one character and giving orders to the rest you can actually switch between your team and control each character as needed.

@CorndogBurglar - Sounds cool. And I get the challenge of incorporating the team. The biggest problem is programming in the variety of unique power sets into good gameplay. You have some projectile and brawler characters, which fit easily into gameplays But then you have some more challenging power sets. Telekinesis can be tough to do well, although the recent Jedi games have done it. Teleportation can be tough. Flying can be tough. And the more playable characters, the more difficult it would be to ensure each of their gameplay is done well.

Keep that. We need a Black Widow or Daredevil game next from Insomniac. I’d love to see F4 at some point down the line too.

@GhostDog - One thing doesn't stop the rest from happening. I agree on Daredevil, Black Widow not too sure about it, would feel like your standard spy game. If we were to have a game on her, probably a studio like the one that does the Hitman games would be a better option.

@Urubrodi - Damn that would be really cool, actually. I would play the hell out of that Black Widow game.

@Urubrodi - she could be a DLC.

I think Daredevil could be something special and smaller scale. A gritty crime drama type of game. Plenty of stealth and great fight mechanics. His powers open a lot of opportunities

Like that ultimate venom in picture

A proper Venom game, with proper violence, would be neat. It's a great character just needs to be properly done. But if that happens I'd prefer with Eddi Brock and not Harry Osborn.

It makes sense. I mean we already know that Harry will be Venom unless they surprise us with something else.

I have a feeling that after the events of Spider-Man 2 the symbiote will find a new host. Eddie Brock. We'll get to experience his journey/struggle being a host to the symbiote while becoming a lethal protector in the process.

Eddie was teased in 2018's Spider-Man. When you find one of the backpack collectibles there is a "farewell card" from the Daily Bugle. Peter explains that he quit the bugle because all of the false info demanded by Jonah on Spidey.

Among the signatures on the card is from Eddie Brock. Other signatures on the card also include Betty Brant, Joseph "Robbie" Robertson, and I think Ben Urich.

I hope it is Eddie as Venom in a solo/Spin-off game.
