It looks like Marvel Studios & Sony Pictures may have found their new Spider-Man

Latino-Review's Kellvin Chavez is reporting that long-time rumored Spider-Man frontrunner Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game) may have finally landed the coveted role of Peter Parker beating out the likes of Tom Holland (In The Heart Of The Sea) and Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), amongst others. Even though we're still awaiting official confirmation, if true, Butterfield is expected to make his long-awaited debut as the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler in the Joe & Anthony Russo-helmed Captain America: Civil War, which recently kicked off production. Details about how large a role he'll play in the Marvel epic are still unknown.

Following his presumed debut appearance in Civil War, Spidey is set to receive another live-action solo outing on July 28, 2017, a Phase 3 film which will see Peter Parker return to a high school setting and kick off a whole new generation of Spider-Man films in the MCU. Additionally, Sony Pictures are also developing an animated Spider-Man adventure, with The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller, set to arrive July 20, 2018.

Sounds like we're going to see a lot more of the beloved web-swinger in the near future, which should be welcome news for Spidey fans everywhere! What do you guys think of Butterfield's potential casting? Sound off with your thoughts below!

UPDATE: Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter has tweeted that Butterfield may not have landed the role... yet. Butterfield, along with a few others, were expected to test for Spider-Man this week, but as far as he knows, there is no offer on the table. However, Kit does confirm that many are rooting for Asa to eventually land the coveted role. Justin Kroll of Variety corroborated Kit's information and also tweeted that Butterfield has tested, but Marvel is still in the process of testing other actors. He also adds that while Asa is very high on the list, the studio is also very fond of Tom Holland.

It's not official, El Mayimbe is just saying Marvel has entered into final negotiations with Butterfield. Which makes it unofficially official, basically.

Headline is a bit misleading. No paperwork or official word. That being said, Butterfield is an exceptional choice.

It lines up with what we've been hearing though, that Marvel is going to officially announce it in the next week or so.

IF he's right, I'd imagine it's just crossing the T's and dotting the I's at this point.

I'm definitely a fan of this. The kid's got obvious acting chops, he's proven he can handle a big franchise, and he actually looks the part.

The casting will probably get eaten alive by few who want the impeccable alphas, but the way this casting in most ways is the exact opposite is why it works. Ironically, is why Andrew Garfield's casting didn't.

Asa playing Spidey is awesome. Hopefully they start with him sometime in sophomore year and have like two movies in high school, and then see him go to college thereafter.

As I'm excited by this news......I feel for Garfield as he got 2 awful scripts to work with...

I think it's most important how they handle Peters' characterization. Which hasn't been done justice since Spider-Man & Spider-Man 2 (In most cases).

Well no, we haven't gotten an official announcement so "Asa Butterfield Is Marvel's SPIDER-MAN" is not an accurate title at the moment. I would say more so "Asa Butterfield Maybe Is Marvel's SPIDER-MAN"

"I feel for Garfield as he got 2 awful scripts to work with..."

Same. The dude is obviously a big fan of the character, he did everything the writers told him to do...but he was just stuck with such shitty scripts and a studio that had no idea what they were doing.

That said, he was just flat-out miscast. It'll be nice to finally see Peter Parker as a high-schooler, and NOT have to ignore that the actor is obviously 30 years old.

@TheAmbassador It was a joint announcement between both Latino Review and El Mayimbe. Which is why neither of them is claiming an "exclusive" on this story.

Andrew Garfield wasn't my problem with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. I have a problem with how he was set to be portrayed (I'll argue he nailed what was given), and the given shitty scripts plus direction was out of his paygrade.
