With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice taking over the news cycle, it was only a matter of time until Warner Bros. started aiming the spotlight on Suicide Squad. Director David Ayer recently spoke to Total Film Magazine for their upcoming May 2016 issue, and the director talks about his excitement to change up the comic book movie genre.
"In your normal comic-book movie you have the good guy, the hero, and there's a checklist and you can reverse engineer their actions from any given situation because they're going to do the right thing," explained Ayer. "These are bad guys, so they have a lot more options open to them in any given situation. They're capable of anything, and that's the fun of this." Ayer then goes on to reveal that there is a lot more in store for fans who believe they have the film figured out. "What's interesting to me is how there's been a lot of perceptions of what this film is because we have been exposed more than other movies. What people think this movie is is not what it is. There's so much more to come."
When Jared Leto joined the cast of Suicide Squad, fans were concerned as to whether or not Leto was capable of taking on such an iconic role. Suicide Squad director David Ayer believed that Leto was more than capable, and he revealed what it was like to have the Joker walking around on set. "What Jared has done is absolutely incredible," said the director on Leto's method approach to the Joker. "When he steps onto the set the world stops. Everything stops. What he's done is so powerful, so menacing, so palpable, you can feel him. The crew stops working and just watches him. I have to get everybody going again because he's so fascinating."
Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5, 2016.
