Mel Gibson Confirms SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel Talks; Additional Details Surface

Last night, news broke that Warner Bros. was courting Academy Award-winning director Mel Gibson to helm their Suicide Squad sequel and now, we've received confirmation from Gibson himself.

Even though Mel Gibson is on record describing Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as "a piece of sh-t," a major report flew in yesterday afternoon revealing that Gibson was, oddly enough, Warner Bros.' top choice to helm their upcoming Suicide Squad sequel - taking over from original director David Ayer, who has shifted his focus to the Margot Robbie-led Gotham City Sirens.

Gibson has also previously expressed his feelings toward comic book movies, which weren't all that favorable, so it's definitely surprising to hear his name at the top of the list. However, Gibson himself confirmed talks last night during an appearance at a screening of his most recent directorial venture, Hacksaw Ridge, which is currently in the running for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.

The original video has now been removed, but during the Q&A session, he was asked directly if he could address the rumors: "So is this getting close to a deal or is it a first date?," to which he replied: "It's kind of a first date." These comments corroborate the original story, which suggested the studio was still in the very early stages of negotiations with the Academy Award-winning director.

Following up on THR's initial report, Justin Kroll, of Variety, was able to obtain a few further details late last night regarding Gibson's sudden interest in the project and it has a lot more to do with the film's cast than it does with the actual material, with an opportunity to finally work with Will Smith likely being his main motivation. Kroll also adds that it may be a while before we hear any updates, but does affirm that if Gibson wants the job, it's his.

If Gibson does decide to ultimately pass, other directors said to be in the running are Jonathan Levine (The Night Before), Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), and Daniel Espinosa (Life).
