PEACEMAKER Star John Cena Responds To Claims He Abandoned Pro Wrestling For Hollywood Like The Rock Before Him

John Cena once tore into Dwayne Johnson for leaving pro wrestling for Hollywood, only to later do the same himself. Now, the Peacemaker star has chimed in to respond to those who say he's a hypocrite...

As some of you might recall, it was back in 2011/2012 that WWE Superstars John Cena and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson were in the midst of a massive rivalry. That culminated with two of the most iconic wrestlers ever being pitted against each other for the first time on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

The year before, The Rock had cost Cena the WWE Championship before later scoring a win over him at WrestleMania 28 (Cena, meanwhile, tied them at 1-1 in a rematch at WrestleMania 29). While pro wrestling is scripted, tensions between the two rapidly increased heading into that first bout and their promos started getting increasingly real.

Cena, for example, took a lot of shots at Johnson for abandoning wrestling to go to Hollywood, something he himself has since done after finding great success in everything from Bumblebee to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker

Talking during the WWE Fastlane press conference this past Saturday (via TheRingReport.com), Cena - who recently apologised to The Rock for how he handled himself during their feud - responded to those who feel he's now guilty of doing what he once condemned the Brahma Bull for.

"I 100% see and understand that perspective," he responded. "If you've been following what I've tried to do, especially as of late, publicly and personally to Dwayne Johnson, I've stated that although I thought I was trying to do what's best for business, I went about it the wrong way. I violated his trust and I made allegations about his perspective that I knew nothing about."

"And deep down, I was a fan. I wanted The Rock back. I wanted to do anything to get The Rock back, but I did it the wrong way. I didn't do it the respectful way, so I had to eat a little bit of crow. I had to say 'I'm sorry and I was wrong,' because I am sorry and I was wrong, and that's a very humbling experience."

They have since cleared the air, of course, and Cena concluded by admitting he now sees there is life beyond WWE and the squared circle. "We all have our own struggles. We all live our own lives. It was a great learning experience for my mistake with that feud with The Rock."

Honestly, it's hard to blame Johnson, Cena, or even Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista for using wrestling as a launching platform for mainstream success. It remains to be seen who the next star to do so will be, though current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns is still a likely possibility.
