Geeks WorldWide is reporting that Academy Award-winner Benicio del Toro is in talks to join the cast of James Gunn's
The Suicide Squad as presumably the film's primary antagonist. While official details are understandably unavailable, the character in question has been given the codename "The Mayor," and is being described as an "
irascible old warrior who lives for war."
Considering no trade has yet corroborated this report, it's probably best to take this news with a grain of salt for now.
The confirmed cast for the reported soft reboot currently features Idris Elba (?), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), and Michael Rooker (King Shark).
del Toro already has a history with Gunn, having played The Collector for him in Marvel's
Guardians of the Galaxy and also appearing in a pair of additional Marvel Cinematic Universe adventures,
Thor: The Dark World and
Avengers: Infinity War. His illustrious resume also includes, but is not limited to,
The Usual Suspects,
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,
Snatch,
The Way of the Gun,
Traffic,
Sin City,
Sicario,
Star Wars: The Last Jedi,
Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and
Escape at Dannemora.
