THE SHALLOWS Director Jaume Collet-Serra Is The Frontrunner To Helm The SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel

It doesn't look as if Mel Gibson will be landing the Suicide Squad 2 gig after all, as Jaume Collet-Serra has reportedly emerged as the new frontrunner to direct the sequel for Warner Bros. Pictures...

Deadline reports that The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra has emerged as Warner Bros.' first choice to helm Suicide Squad 2, which would see Will Smith, Margot Robbie and co. reprise their roles from David Ayer's divisive first installment.

As previously reported, the studio was in negotiations with Mel Gibson in addition to several other filmmakers, but ultimately settled on Collet-Serra to "take the reins of a franchise."

Suicide Squad did not go down very well with the majority of fans, but it did wind up grossing $745 million at the box office, so a sequel was pretty much an inevitability.

It doesn't sound like the Spanish director has actually signed on the dotted line yet so this could be subject to change, but how would you guys feel if he did take the helm? Let is know in the comments section.

UPDATE: According to THR, the most recent script treatment was written by Zak Penn (Avengers, Ready Player One).

@MarsivNayr - 6/10, some logical issues (i guess everybody mention them already) but it was entertaining. well, maybe beside that scene when their helicopter crashes. first time they meet the creatures is kinda boring.
