THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn Confirms That Harley Quinn Will Return To The DCEU

There's been some speculation that The Suicide Squad might have been Margot Robbie's final time suiting-up as Harley Quinn in the DCEU, but director James Gunn has confirmed that the character will return.

Margot Robbie debuted as Harley Quinn in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, before taking the lead in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn, and returning for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

Though the Academy Award-nominee's performances as the deranged antihero were praised by fans and critics alike, none of the above movies featuring Quinn proved to be box office hits. This led to Warner Bros. scrapping at least one other Harley-focused project (that we know of), which in turn led to speculation that Robbie may have decided to step away from the role.

Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of Quinn's debut in Batman: The Animated Series, and Gunn took to Twitter to share a couple of previously unseen The Suicide Squad production stills. A fan asked the filmmaker if we'd see Harls in the DCEU again, and he responded with a straight-to-the-point "Yes."

This obviously doesn't give us much to go on, but Gunn does seem pretty sure that Quinn will make her return at some point. This could suggest that he's aware of an upcoming project featuring the character, or may even have something in the works with Robbie himself.

Could Harley show up in Peacemaker season 2, perhaps? That seems like a long-shot, but then we never expected to see members of the Justice League appear in the season 1 finale, so who knows what Gunn has in store for us.

@nibs - I think they offered that or basically anything he wanted first. But he chose SS.

Short of them confirming it, it seemed like a given. She was great in The Suicide Squad, and Margot Robbie is just so darn charasmatic in the role. Too good to pass up.

She’s one of the few bankable characters they have, of course she’s coming back

I do think it's an interesting case of an actor perfectly fitting a role but none of the projects her character is in don't end up delivering. Even the suicide squad didn't seem like they knew what to do with her.

I'd be open to it though. Especially since Gunn seems to really like working with robbie.

@Origame - I thought the Suicide Squad used her perfectly compared to the rest of what Harley has been in for the DCEU.

@slickrickdesigns - definitely the best but she could've been cut out.

You just gave me a really good explanation for more than just Harley Quinn's casting. In my opinion, it also goes for Superman and Batman too

I will say this I'm not the biggest fan of James Gunn's Suicide Squad I think it's meh but one positive I'll it besides making fall in love with Peacemaker was rejuvenating my interest in Harley Quinn so I'm game for her to return in the right projects. Assault On Arkham is still the best Suicide Squad movie.

Two back-to-back box office bombs with movies featuring this iteration of the character, when are they going to learn?

@soberchimera - 3 if you count the original Suicide Squad yet they won't touch a Superman or Green Lantern movie.

@soberchimera - Literal diminishing returns however, the third time she popped up, I’m pretty sure that movie also came out on HBO Max, I don’t remember exactly I could be wrong. But it was definitely in the Covid summer months of last year. However, I’m pretty sure 007 and fast and furious and Kong had done pretty well.

I’m starting to remember the list of things that went wrong and that they did wrong and I don’t feel like remembering, I’m going to sleep, I just got off Night Shift

@Godzilla2000Zer - wait... the first Squad made 750 million though

@TheWalkingCuban - It was released theatrically as well, but you’re right, the simultaneous release on HBO Max definitely hurt it’s BO.

@MyCoolYoung - Critically it was mixed to negative and it hurt the box office for the second one.

With all those cancellations I’m surprised there’s still a DCEU
