Composer Hans Zimmer took part in "Ask Me Anything" on Tuesday on Reddit, where talked his favourite musicians, how challenging it is to be a Hollywood composer and the new Superman movie, Man of Steel. He said that audiences can "expect hope" from his latest score. "Hope and not cynicism. The opposite of The Dark Knight."

Zimmer revealed that he is a big fan of the source material. "I grew up with comic books, so I am a huge Superman fan, so that actually became very daunting because I didn't want to ruin one of my favorite characters for a whole generation." The new theme for Clark Kent was the hardest for the German composer to crack "because I was procrastinating for so long, trying to shake off the enormous shadow that John Williams' Superman theme cast."

The Man of Steel soundtrack is available now.

That IM3 score should of been something uplifting...something dramatic yet filled with playfulness

something you would hear from a Dynasty/Dallas or Falcon Crest theme

kinda like this

aaaaahhh Knots Landing :)

Man, I HATE that Amazing Spider-Man score. Those trumpets make me want to puke, every time I hear them. Iron Man 3 should've kept in line with Iron Man 1's score.

I'm afraid that it sums up the current state of Hollywood movie scores. With a few exceptions, the music is fairly generic and interchangeable between films. While I'm sure the Man of Steel score will function adequately in the context of the film, I don't think you could claim that the music itself poses any identity.

Zimmer can certainly deliver something fresh now and again (Sherlock Holmes was a genuine pleasant surprise) and I am a big fan of Gladiator and Backdraft, but maybe producers should shop around a bit more in order to inject a bit of originality back into their film scores.

Maybe we were spoilt in the 80s when composers like Williams, Goldsmith and Barry were churning out classics year after year.
