MAN OF STEEL Secures China Release Date, Review Embargo Lifts June 10th

China has emerged as an important international film market, second behind only the U.S. in terms of box office potential. Man of Steel will need the film to do well there to approach Iron Man 3 box office numbers.

For those not keeping up with box office discourse the last few months, China has become the second largest box office market in the world, second to only the U.S. and recently surpassing Japan. To put all this in context, North America spent $10.8 billion last year on film, while China film-goers served up $2.7 billion to film distributors and Japan rounded out the top three, spending $2.4 billion. But China has strict regulations in place for screening films not made in that country and to that end many studios are making special overtures to secure one of the limited foreign film slots. Looper, Iron Man 3 and Transformers 4 are a few recent films that have partnered with Chinese producers and/or released special Chinese theatrical cuts. Man of Steel has made no such gestures but they've still managed to secure a film slot in the important box office country. The Hollywood Reporter analyzes Man of Steel's potential there as being extremely promising as J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness will be finishing its run just as Man of Still opens there. Note, Hong Kong operates on a separate distribution regulations from mainland China, Man of Steel will open on June 27th there.

And if you're looking forward to reading more in-depth film reviews on Man of Steel, noteworthy online film blogger Steven "Frosty" Weintraub informs that the review embargo lifts on June 10th. Look for a massive amount of reviews to drop that day (or don't if you want to avoid any spoilers).

WB always lifts the embargo on a Monday on the week of their big movies as long as the movie is good. If it's shit like Green Lantern, they will hold onto that embargo for dear life.

@Supes No, the embargo lift date for TDKR was July 16th. If that makes you feel any better.

The embargo for TDKR was supposed to be July 15th, I guess the night before the world premiere. This embargo is the night of the premiere. Not a big deal. Most big movies have embargoes in some form or fashion.

And if I am not mistaken the TDKR embargo was lifted the week of the movies release date. I suspect this embargo is kept the same to avoid major spoilers hitting the Internet.

WB's embargo usually runs till the week of the movie's release, nothing new.

And glad we're getting a China release, no need to change anything since The U.S. military is a threat in this movie.

@CavEl

If anything the US Military is a heroic presence in the film. At least WB isn't selling
out to the Chinese like Marvel did by giving them a special cut of the film.
