James Gunn Addresses More DCEU/DCU Continuity Issues And Says No Man Of Tomorrow Trailer This December

James Gunn has confirmed The Suicide Squad is DCU canon, but his comments on Superman, Harley Quinn, The Joker, and Man of Tomorrow's trailer raise more questions among comic book fans.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has declared that 2021's The Suicide Squad is now officially DCU canon. In doing so, he's arguably created more confusion about a universe that was supposed to be a completely clean break from the DCEU.

For example, Gunn has decided that Idris Elba's Bloodsport, who claimed to have taken Henry Cavill's Superman down with a Kryptonite bullet, actually crossed paths with David Corenswet's Man of Steel.

Questioned about that on Threads, Gunn said the question of whether Robert DuBois sent the hero to intensive care "will be answered." He also clarified that the continuity issue with Kryptonite being gone in the DCU is because Superman is set "two or three years" after The Suicide Squad.

Later, the filmmaker defended his position, saying that when it comes to continuity, he "was asked this shit constantly at Marvel."

The uncertainty surrounding whether Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn has left Gunn scrambling to figure out whether The Joker and Harley are active in the DCU. When a fan suggested DC Studios would likely give Harley a fresh start if Robbie doesn't come back, Gunn replied, "Yes, basically. The problem isn't Harley/recasting; it's Harley and her relationship to Joker."

"Harley came about because of her relationship with Joker in most every iteration," he added. "We haven't said the DCU Joker even exists yet, so it backs us into a corner before we start. That's the issue."

Original plans called for The Brave and the Bold to revolve around Batman training his son, Damian, as Robin. It's hard to imagine The Joker not existing in that world, but the movie has been creatively overhauled since being announced at the start of 2023.

Gunn has also reined in expectations for those hoping a Man of Tomorrow trailer will be attached to Dune: Part Three this December. "[It's] expected by whom?" he said, later adding, "More like James not wanting people to be disappointed when there's no trailer in December."

Last December, the first Supergirl trailer was completely overshadowed by the Avengers: Doomsday teasers. With that in mind, Gunn may be hoping to avoid the Man of Tomorrow sneak peek being lost in the shuffle when Dune: Part Three and the next Avengers movie dominate the conversation over the holidays.

In Man of Tomorrow, Superman will be forced to team up with Lex Luthor to battle Brainiac, a threat not just to Metropolis but to the entire world.

Written and directed by James Gunn, the movie stars include David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.

Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, Sinqua Walls, and Adria Arjona will also star. There's still no official word on whether the latter is playing Maxima or Wonder Woman, two roles she's repeatedly been linked with since being cast.

Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

@UltimaRex - Well that logic makes sense everyone is losing their minds over Doomsday, don't know anything about Dune though so yeah MoT trailer should be in Jan can't wait.

Bit confused on his Bloodsport and Corenswet connection though lol

I really hate how Gunn just makes shit up in terms of what’s canon and not.

This is exactly why he needed a full clean slate - not picking what stays and what doesn’t SMFH

SupermanFamFan - 10/30/2026, 9:57 AM
In terms of Harley yeah it makes sense that we need Joker first, but if we go by Suicide Squad canon he doesn't have to incorporate Joker first. But I would be lying if I said Gunn has not backed himself into an awkward position...

Gunn has said Bruce will be mid thirties like Superman. If Batman is about a decade into his career then it’d be strange if Joker didn’t exist. Dick Grayson is 19-20 and Nightwing but Joker hasn’t been introduced yet?

SupermanFamFan - 10/30/2026, 10:22 AM
@Truebeliever333 - Yeah Gunn this is why Gunn should shut up he is only confusing things which then begs the question is he doing this on purpose?
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/30/2026, 10:25 AM
@Truebeliever333 - I think it depends on the creatives hence why he’s giving a lot of answers about whether certain characters may exist or not yet…

It all depends on the filmmakers or showrunners doing these movies/shows on whether they decide to utilize the character or not & what take they decide to do.

I agree , it would be odd if Joker doesn’t exist by then but maybe he could be the leader of the Red Hood gang at that point etc?.

@SupermanFamFan - Here's what it looks like when someone who cares deeply about DC lore and continuity maps out a timeline:

Greg Weisman is either autistic or the most detail-oriented DC superfan to ever exist lol

(God, I miss Young Justice.)

@TheVisionary25 - Batman and Robin never fought Joker prior to Dick becoming Nightwing. It seems obvious Joker exists, whatever they do about Harley.

@SupermanFamFan - YJ is like the only time we've even gotten an adaptation that feels like a "lived in" DC Universe. Keeping the classic JLA origin and having all the main heroes be well established at the start was such an incredible storytelling decision.

Makes me wish we had gotten that George Miller Justice League movie in 2009. I think he was planning to have it be an already established League as well.

I thought for the longest time that Gunn was going to do the same when he said "no origin stories", but the DCU just feels like a quirky Elseworlds project at basically every stage.

With everything Gunn has been saying and doing, it's almost as if he were the captain of the Titanic, seeing the iceberg on the horizon and deliberately steering the ship toward it.

You keep copy-pasting this from an earlier article, and it annoys my eyes everytime I read an article relating to MoT:

Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, Sinqua Walls, and Adria Arjona will also star. However, as we mentioned above, we still don't know whether the latter is playing Maxima or Wonder Woman. There's also speculation that Eva De Dominici is playing one of the characters, and there's always a chance the Diana Prince rumblings don't pan out. We'll have to wait and see

You don’t mention anything regarding Adria Arjona, Maxima or Wonder Woman above this, and haven’t in any of the last several article you have copy-pasted this part, and it’s getting annoying to keep reading that 😂

The thing that causes Gunn and his DCFU V2 the most trouble in James Gunn constantly fiddling with James Gunn. It seems like there are 2 of him who constantly screw things up.

@DocSpock - He needs to just stay off social media. He did something similar with Guardians and needing to self edit lore into the series with tweets.

The plans that happen in the films will be completely different than the brainstorm plans he spews on Twitter every day. A podcast though? Yeah, this dude's lost his mind.

James Gunn destroyed the DCU by including The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker into the new universe. It makes absolutely no sense and now the continuity is like Fox X-Men level confusion. You had one job James but no your arrogance to include your own work killed the DCU before it even began.
Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/30/2026, 11:40 AM
@KineticAce - I disagree. The decision to have the universe already in motion when the DCU begins makes sense or can. Now that doesn’t mean every choice has made sense.

Gunn clearly prefers to focus on the quirkier portions of DC and wants to make them even quirkier. I think that really worked with Suicide Squad and Peacemaker S1. But, a Polka Dot Man show? Nah!

The guy needs to focus on getting the big projects right. Man of Tomorrow is a big test for his DCU. It should be a billion or close to a billion dollar movie. To achieve that it’ll need to bring in people who didn’t go see Superman.

He and someone like Taiki can deliver great stuff but when they get over their skis they really get over their skis.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 10/30/2026, 11:33 AM
It should have been a clean reboot but Gunn gets too attached to his babies and wanted to bring them with him, even if it creates a confusing mess.
