Being a comic book fan for 40 + years sure has it's advantages and one of them is to be able to see the comic book heroes that I grew up with portrayed on the big screen in a way that finally does them justice!! Now don't get me wrong, comic book movies that came out in the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and so on were good for their times and although we had to sit through poor effects, poor acting, poor story lines, and poor costumes, we still got to see our heroes in live action on TV or at the Movies.
As far as the Superman movies are concerned, this is by far the best! I will always hold Christopher Reeves near and dear and to me he will always be Superman but it is time to bring in the new blood and Henry Cavill is just that. He is the new Superman in his portrayal, his look, and his attitude.
The continuous action and fighting is a breath of fresh air that the last few movies were lacking in. The special effects were amazing. The story of Superman has changed countless times throughout the years in the comics and it makes sense to do so with this movie. I for one did not want to see the exact origin played out yet again and I welcomed the liberties that they took with this movie. There will be those who say that this movie is just a modern day reboot of Superman 1 & 2 from the 70's but trust me when I say that "that is nowhere near the truth"!
Again with this movie as with other comic book movies, someone felt pressured to change the ethnicity of a well known character (Perry White) when it is a completely ridiculous notion! As I've said many times before, LEAVE THE CHARACTERS ALONE!! Stop giving in to this incorrect modern day thinking. You don't realize that you take a character's identity away when you do this. Are you going to make WAR BIRD Chinese instead of Native American? Are you going to make LUKE CAGE Caucasian instead of African American? Didn't think so!
I loved the way that this movie focuses on Kal's journey to find his identity and what he is destined for. The casting was pretty good for the most part and as I mentioned earlier, Henry Cavill was the perfect choice to play Superman! The costume change didn't affect me as much as I thought it would even though it is the first time that a major change has been done from the original costume.
I was completely disappointed at the fact that there IS NOT a post credits scene! What the heck Zack Synder??? If it was me I would have had a scene after the credits that showed Bruce Wayne reading the Daily Planet about Superman and saying to Alfred "I'm going to Metropolis, don't wait up"!
Overall I give MAN OF STEEL a 9 out of 10.
