New Superman Movie is "In a Weird Place"

Director James McTeigue thinks Superman is "ripe for a retooling."

A new Superman movie...Is it on? Is it off? Will it be a prequel, a sequel or a revamp?

It seems that the theatrical fate of the Man of Steel is up in the air, for the time being. Director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) is the man rumored to be on the short list for helming another film, but even he is not sure what's going on. On Friday, McTeigue told MTV:

"[The Superman movie is] in a weird place at the moment. They're trying to work out what they're doing. Warner Brothers is trying to figure out their next move on it. There's some things you can do with the Superman franchise, there's other things you can't do. So it hasn't gone anywhere."

McTeigue is currently promoting his latest film, Ninja Assassin, but added this about the Superman franchise:

"I think it's ripe for a retooling. I would love to — if it happened, I would at least start a conversation about it.

What the hell is wrong with WB?! A new Superman movie is practically guaranteed to earn a pile of cash but they're sitting on their asses letting the character gather dust! ;(

WB is built on procrastination. A justice league film is a nerd's wet dream (I have had such a dream). Superman has so much potential to make another great movie. I still think that 1978's superman stands as the greatest cbm ever made, but that was over 30 years ago. We need a new supes movie, and definitely not a rehash of the original. Hopefully green lantern will show WB, that they need to step their game up a little

Good lord. Why is this so hard?Clark goes to Metropolis, meets his supporting cast, becomes Superman, saves alot of people, draws the ire of Lex Luthor, Brainiac comes to Earth, tries to steal our knowledge before destroying the world, teams up with Lex, huge battles, cool special FX, good triumphs over evil, end credits.

Simple.

Not opposed to a reboot, but Burton imagined a retooling. Do I need to post a Cage pic?

if they stand any chance of going against marvel by making a JLA movie, then they'll need to reboot this and batman. then make movies for flash, wonderwoman, and green arrow. GL is already on the way. they can introduce martian manhunter, and aquaman (if need be) in the JLA movie. but my god they have a LOT of work ahead of themselves. they've already said they wanted to follow the Marverl Formula, so what the hell is taking so long?

it's F'ing superman! that should be the easiest one for them to crank out, my god

Jesus, WB get a move on! There is a huge potential for $$$ right in front of you, but your eyes are so far up your asses you can't see it!

Just reboot it with Routh!

A reboot is needed, they'd be crazy to think they can continue with what has been done in Returns. If they do what will the story be, The Last Father of Krypton? That may work if done by DC writers for a comic arc but in a movie, that won't fly!

"There's some things you can do with the Superman franchise, there's other things you can't do."

What the heck do they not want to do? Hell, if the WB has any clue then why did they court Tim Burton, and let it fall to the hands of Jon Peters? I hope this means that DC Entertainment now has "standards" to uphold on the character. WB let the franchise suffer from serious sequalitis (a fate that killed the first Batman series) then let it bounce from sorry hand to sorry hand. Kevin Smith was the only one who might have had a grasp but was replaced with an insider that was proven. Then it was brought back with a film fan who had no concept of the principles of the Comic Character.

I have read here that the character needs to be "modernized" with new suit, background, look, values, friends, job, dark attitude etc. etc.. What happen is a change to the character in his values ended up upsetting longtime fans and hurting the earnings of SR.

DON'T CHANGE A DAMN THING! Our liberal strong additude of today is not the direction to go. Maybe we need a reminder of values that Superman use to represents. Conservitive Christian farm boy with the power to do whatever he wants but chooses to fight for Truth, Justice and the lost American way. The question to ask is how would this character adapt to a modern world but still follow the same design.

His first priority is to the Earth and making sure its protected from any overwhelming threat. The second priority is threats to all men. Third is to his city of Metropolis then his friends.

What makes this character unique is not some ill fated event that clouds his judgment like Batman, Ghostrider, Wolverine or Daredevil. The distruction of his home world has no bearing on Kal-El's judgement. Its the good folks that raised him with strong altrueistic values and guideance which make him a hero to trust. Captain America is very simular except he chose to undergo the Super-soldier Serium treatment that made him instill his dedication to his cause.

Superman should be the example of a super-hero that no other can live up to. Thats how he is reguarded in the comics by his peers. He should also be the "control" hero of all other hero archtypes to judge from. You might not like Superman or understand his cause but he has a distinced role and purpose.

WELLING COULD DO SUPERMAN, I'D WATCH TO SEE WHAT HE DOES.RETURNS WAS OK BUT NOT WHAT I WANTED TO SEE IN A SUPERMAN FILM. WHERE'S THE SUPERPOWERED BAD GUY THAT PUSHES SUPES TO THE LIMIT? SURE ROUTH LOOKS LIKE REEVES, BUT ISN'T IT BEING TOO NOSTALGIC TO KEEP DOING THE SAME THING? FOLLOW THE SAME BEATS? I SAY DO SOMETHING FRESH, SOMETHING NEW...LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO BATMAN BEFORE BEGINS..IT TURNED INTO A MESS, THEN NOLAN STEPPED IN AND CHANGED THE WAY WE SAW BATMAN MOVIES, IT WAS COOL AGAIN.

@ tyler

lolol...tom welling. he couldn't act his way out of a nutsack. not to mention it would make it a smallville movie more than superman. thats just ridiculous.

@ fartman

superman returns wasn't a bad movie, it just needed no kid and more action. we got to see him save a crashing plane, which was the ONLY real action in the whole movie. the other sorry excuses for excitement was when he stopped the bank robbery. which we didn't get to see him do ANYTHING. and at the end...when he got his ass kicked by a couple of jobbers. wow. but it wasnt a "poorly" made movie, just boring.

Hopefully now that DC Entertainment was established, they know what they need from a Superman movie. Just make it already. There have only been a few Superman movies and so much comic book source material to work with. Learn from Iron Man already.

@Joshw, Superman can gather dust and the value of the product will still rise. I mean, they could put out total garbage and the brand will still stand a chance for a revival. So when WB is ready, I hope they get it right and I hope to see Routh back.

They can do this movie so epic, if it takes WB time to figure this out right, give them that time then. I liked the trilogy, forgot who wrote it, but it starts out with a civil war battle on Krypton (much like Kandor on Smallville only bigger) I read it once on one of these sites, not sure which one though. It might be J.J. Abrams or something, don't know.
