Introduction

I've been rewatching Man of Steel recently, and, I have to say, I was dissapointed. It's not by any means a bad movie, it's just a different version of Superman than the one most people identify with. It was Zack Snyder's idea of a good superman movie. So, if Zack can be allowed to spend millions on his idea of the perfect superman, I can sit down write mine on the internet even though I know the comments section will tear me apart for it.

The following is my idea for how to make a great superman movie:

Here is the plan, create a compelling origin that modernizes superman but keeps him a symbol of hope, but keeps him relatable and human.

  • Also, Zod cannot be the villain. He was the villain in Man of Steel, and we can't redo him now.  He also doesn't fit the current premise. I want this first movie to be down to earth, with superman facing human enemies. Aliens come in sequels. So, Lex Luthor and John Corben/ Metallo. Also, make these villains compelling. There are two ways to make a villain compelling, make the audience love them, or make the audience hate them.

  • Also keeping this down to earth, we never really see Krypton. Krypton is implied. This is superman’s story and we see from his point of view.

  • Lex’s character is about power. When he is in a scene with someone he is the focus, cameras angle so he is taller. He is dominant. When superman shows up he is floating above lex, he is always above lex somehow. When lex gets ahold of Kryptonite, this changes. He is once again above and in control. Luthor is the most powerful man on earth, until superman shows up, and then he's second.

Characters:

  • Clark Kent -A small town country boy at heart. Always optimistic, and kind. Becomes much more confident as Superman.

  • Lois Lane- A reporter always looking for a scoop. She will often drag others along with her on her searches whether they like it or not. She refuses to stand for any injustice.

  • Jimmy Olsen- A young photographer working at the Daily Planet. A friendly guy. He loves Metropolis.

  • Perry White- Born and raised in Metropolis. He was once a young reporter like Lois, but he’s given up. LexCorp controls every other paper in Metropolis, and is doing everything in its power to crush the planet. His paper is a sinking ship, and it’s been reduced to hiring anyone with a story. The Globe n top of his building hasn't turned in years.

  • Lex Luthor- The most powerful man on Earth. He owns  half the buildings in Metropolis, and rules the city like a dictator. He is a self made man, and the owner of LexCorp, a company with weapons contracts on both sides.

  • Mercy Graves- Lex’s bodyguard, chauffeur, personal assistant, and lover. Fiercely loyal to him.

  • John Corben/Metallo- A military man and Lois’ ex-boyfriend. He still has feelings for her, despite the relationship ending badly.

  • General Lane- Lois’ estranged father. They haven’t spoken in years.

  • Jonathan Kent -a simple Kansas farmer, but he instilled Clark with the values that made him the man he is today.

  • Martha Kent - She had just learned she couldn’t have children when she and Jonathan found Clark, and she has loved him as her own from the moment she found him.

  • Whitney Fordman-  A rival of Clark’s during his high school days.

  • Lena Lang- a close friend of Clark’s during his childhood, and his secret crush.

Story:

Begin with a young, pre teen lex luthor, on a trip to Smallville with his abusive, drunken, door to door salesman father. They are staying in a motel and lex decides to go out and explore, ending up near the Kent farm, where he finds a small glowing green meteor rock.

Next we see superman’s childhood, and some defining moments,we should maybe begin with Clark’s earliest memories: his heat vision accidentally set something on fire. He thinks he did something wrong, but Ma and Pa Kent are supportive, they tell him he’s not different, he’s still their son.

Fast forward to high school, Teen Clark is using his super strength irresponsibly in a contest against Whitney Fordman as Lena Lang watches. She and Whitney leave. Pa Kent tells him that he should use his powers for something more, and he got those abilities for a reason. He then reveals the spaceship Clark came from, buried in the corn field. Clark freaks out and flies away, but notices Whitney’s car in a ditch, and ends up saving him and Lena before it explodes, and takes them to the hospital. Clark returns to his home, and tells his adopted parents he wants to use his power to help people.

Fast Forward, Clark has  become a bit of a celebrity in Smallville after saving Whitney and Lana. He talks to Ma Kent about how he’s realized he prefered just being normal and his hero status is off putting. Martha heads out and looks at the ship that brought Clark, noticing the large ‘S’ like crest on it, and gets some kryptonian cloth he was wrapped in as a baby out of the barn.

Have him grow up, get his costume made by Martha out of kryptonian fabric from his rocket, head to the big city, and start fighting crime and saving people. We introduce Lex Luthor at a Smallville diner, where he offers a woman a million dollars to spend a month with him, giving her ten minutes to decide. He heads to his limo,(driven by Mercy) and immediately leaves. It is implied he does this regularly at different diners around the state of Kansas. We introduce Lois is searching for the mysterious do gooder for an interview, and Jimmy Olsen, who is helping Lois and looking for a photo. Clark Kent appears at the planet with an interview from “Superman” first, and asking for a job. His relationship with Lois is a bit icy because of this, but they are both assigned to report on Lex Luthor’s debut of a new military exosuit. Before this Clark learns of Jimmy’s quest to get a picture of Superman, and appears to him in costume on the roof of the Daily Planet.

Lois discovers her General father is at LexCorp, along with her ex, Sergeant John Corban. Lois tries to break into Luthor’s office during the presentation, because she believes he has been selling weapons to terrorists, and drags Clark along. A terrorist group: Intergang, attacks, and Lois is thrown out a window. Clark saves her as Superman, John Corben enters an exo suit to fight Intergang, but is injured when it mysteriously malfunctions. Superman defeats Intergang, and retrieves the other exosuit, which an intergang member was escaping with. Lex discovers a ring made of meteor rock he owns has an effect on Superman. Lois believes Lex sabotaged Corben to let Intergang escape, and the attack on LexCorp was planned by him, as a way of covering up he was selling to Intergang, and making the government more interested in buying his suits to fight back against terrorists.

Lex decides he must kill Superman for ruining his plans, and he convinces General Lane Superman is a threat to national security, and convinces a paraplegic Corben whose heart is failing that the malfunction was caused by an electric field around superman(that comes from the power he gets from the sun) to let him operate on him to make him a living weapon against Superman.( this happens at the same time Superman is saving a suicidal girl in a scene out of All Star Superman. Corban is transformed into Metello, his entire body is gone except for his internal organs and head, and his heart is powered by Lex’s ring. Metello contemplates the monster he has become and decides his life no longer has any purpose except to kill superman. He hunts down Superman, nearly killing him. Lois and Jimmy arrive at the scene of the fight. The government attempts to bring Superman in, but Corben tries to kill Superman for what he believes he did to him. Superman barely escapes, but soon loses consciousness.

Lois and Jimmy get him out of there as Metello kills the other soldiers trying to bring him down, and continues his search for Superman. Lex and General Lane are at Lexcorp and General Lane tries to shut Metallo down, but Lex destroys the fail safe device so that Metello can kill superman, and takes Lane hostage. Lois decides to try and talk down her rampaging ex, and Jimmy is left to watch as Superman recovers. Lois finds Corben rampaging through the streets looking for superman, and tries to tell him to stop and it's lex’s fault, not superman’s. Metello then decides to kill Lex. Lois realizes her father is at LexCorp and heads there to try and stop Metello.

Superman wakes up and heads out to try and face Metello again. At Lexcorp Lois tries to get to her father but is stopped by Mercy(revealed to be a cyborg augmented by Lex), and they battle. Metello attacks LexCorp and is about to kill Luthor when Superman speeds Lex,Lois, Mercy, and General Lane out, and battles Metallo. Lois arrives and tries to talk him down. Metello converts himself into a Kryptonite bomb, to commit suicide and kill Lex at the same time. Superman carries Metello into the upper atmosphere, as his powers begin to fade. Metello explodes and Superman falls to Earth. A week later, Luthor is in prison, preparing for his trial. Mercy is now the CEO of LexCorp, taking orders from Lex in prison. Superman received a medal from the president for his actions Lois and Clark interview Luthor in prison, where he explains his hatred of Superman( Lex worked for every bit of power he had, Superman is an alien who was born with power, and doesn’t deserve it, saving his life was the worse thing superman could have done, lex never asked for a savior, and now every time Lex sees himself in the mirror, he will see that the only reason he’s alive is Superman. Superman will always have power over him, and doesn’t deserve any of it) In reality, it doesn’t matter how Superman got his power, what matters is how he used it, even without any powers, Clark would be a far better person than Lex ever could be. As they leave, Lois comments on how Clark looks a bit like Superman. The Daily Planet is having repairs done to the globe on top.

THE END

Nice work, definitely interesting and more of a classic take on Superman.

How would you cast it?

The crux of a Superman movie always seems to be wear does he get the suit from. I don't know if a modern, movie-going audience would accept it being made from his blanket.

These are some great ideas. I've always thought the first Superman movie should be smaller scale, focusing more on Clark as a human than as an alien. Just wondering, do you have any casting ideas?
