When James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the first chapter of the new DCU slate and The Suicide Squad director revealed that he's currently writing the new Superman movie, many assumed that he may also decide to step behind the camera to helm the project.
Gunn has continued to fuel speculation by sharing various Man of Steel-themed images to social media (see his latest below), and we may now have confirmation thanks to Tom King.
The prolific comic book writer was interviewed for the Comic Pop YouTube show, and spoke a little about Gunn's plans for the DCU before offhandedly mentioning that the filmmaker is "writing and directing" Superman: Legacy.
It's entirely possible that King is mistaken, of course, but we'd say it's more likely that he simply didn't realize this news hadn't officially made public yet!
Right now, all we really know about the Superman: Legacy is that it's set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and will focus on the early days of the character.
“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
