TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM Gives Splinter A Very Surprising Love Interest - SPOILERS

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem makes quite a few changes to what many fans would consider to be the "established" lore (though there have been numerous different interpretations over the years), particularly when it comes to the Turtles' wise rodent sensei.

If you haven't seen Mutant Mayhem yet, spoilers follow.

This take on Splinter is quite a bit different to the calm, centered ninja master we're used to, and is introduced as an overly-protective, human-fearing father who desperately wants to keep his sons from harm. As the story progresses, Splinter begins to realize that his own sense of loneliness is one of the reasons he's so adamant that the boys stay down in the sewers with him.

At one point, Splinter points out how difficult it is to "meet other mutants his age," indicating that he really would like a partner to share his life with. At the end of the movie, he finds that special someone in the form of... Scumbug!?

Yes, the gross, evil cockroach TMNT villain is reimagined as one of Superfly's allies who eventually joins forces with the Turtles. Thanks to a marketing mistake on one of the character posters (see below), there's been some confusion online about Splinter's sexual orientation, but the movie makes it very clear that this take on Scumbug is a female.

“After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will voice the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The cast also includes Jackie Chan as Splinter, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Human problems...

Sidenote: Truth be told, this iteration on paper makes me appreciate Tony Shaloub's casting in the previous movies, cause he sounds spot on for it here.

@MosquitoFarmer - Ya know, I was just thinking the same here as I was looking at that pic of Splinter. I mean, he even LOOKS like he was modeled after Tony (at least in that pic). Especially Tony as Jeebs from the MiB movies (except for the eyes looking in two different directions).

Really good movie - and the new take on Splinter's dynamic with the Turtles worked incredibly well. All the changes felt like such a good modern-day spin on the mythos, and the voice work was just great too. Reznor's score was aces but it felt like the movie didn't really know how to utilize it well; it kind of feels like we only ever hear snippets of it

@tmp3 - Agreed. As a bit of a purist I had a few issues, but it was great overall

@MarkCassidy - It's kind of like Barbie and Spider-Verse where it felt less like a movie based on the Ninja Turtles and more like a movie made from someone who grew up with the IP, and them injecting the material with their own takes on the world. Really refreshing to see them embrace the "teenage" aspect this heavily, and it captured zoomer vernacular in a way that could have easily felt "how do you do fellow kids" in lesser hands

Gusto still drops in every now and then. I remember that idiot that no one liked so he left to make his own site. It was like The [WannabeSite] or something like that? I don't remember.

@CorndogBurglar - Are you guys actually saying "WannabeSite" or is that site censorship, because if it's the latter, that is hilarious. Bravo CBM.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/7/2023, 2:29 PM
@ObserverIO - No, that's site censorship.

Back on the day there was this really annoying guy who was in the comments. He was an ex-marine and bragged about it all the time and was just a real douche bag.

He eventually ended up passing off everyone on the site and got banned. So he went and started his own website that is basically the same as this one. He tried to cause a mass exodus but no one followed him. It was hysterical.

So now you can't even type the name of his site Herr or else it edits it to say "Wannabe Site".

Lol. The good old days.
