TMNT: A New Generation Of Turtles Introduced In THE LAST RONIN: LOST YEARS - SPOILERS

Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo and Donatello are no more, as a new team of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles make their debut in the pages of The Last Ronin - Lost Years...

By MarkCassidy - Jan 27, 2023 10:01 AM EST

TMNT: The Last Ronin - The Lost Years launched earlier this week, and the off-shoot of IDW's insanely popular future-set tale introduced a new generation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to take up the mantle passed on by the legendary Heroes in a Half-Shell.

The Last Ronin is a The Dark Knight Returns-style story which imagines a future where one member of the Awesome Foursome is the last living Turtle, setting out to avenge the death of his brothers by bringing down Shredder's grandson and the authoritarian descendants of the Foot Clan.

Spoilers ahead!

Mikey succeeds in the final issue, but at the cost of his own life. However, the TMNT's legacy will continue as a new team of Turtles is raised and trained by April O'Neil and her daughter, Casey.

"In the five issues of Lost Years, we’ll be covering approximately 16 years, both past (Mikey’s adventures in Asia and Europe) and present/future (basically highlighting the new turtles as they grow from age 3 to age 16)," writer Tom Waltz tells IGN. "We’ll be filling in important plot/character details during those time periods…while also (hopefully) opening the doors for future tales to be told during the timeframe covered that we’re not able to get to in Lost Years (and/or Lost Day). In other words, we’re just getting started!"

We still don't know very much about these new reptilian warriors (even their names are being kept under wraps), but you can get a first look at the character designs below.

You'll be able to tell these lads apart without checking the color of their bandanas, anyway!

Have you guys been reading The Last Ronin? What do you make of this new team? Drop us a comment down below.

I wish the 2014 movie would have been better, so that the 2016 movie could have made more than it did. Oh well.

@TheWalkingCuban - I wish they'd both be better. Oh well. We'll always have TMNT 1990.

@TheWalkingCuban - The ronin story would be better than the essentially rinse and repeat model the franchise has used for years, with a few notable exceptions like Batman. The turtles may be just as well known as Spidey at this point. Not sure why they haven't finally leaned into the more fantastical elements of the franchise now that technology allows.

@The1st - The last movie was pretty fantastical. It had Rocksteady and Bebop and Krang. And they actually made Krang an interdimensional alien. It doesn't really get more fantastical than that. All that would have been left is having the turtles themselves travel through space and dimensions. But they didn't get to that part before the series was cancelled.

@CorndogBurglar - Yep, true. I meant the other mutants/characters, the technodrome on earth and not just materializing there piece by piece. Going to dimension x, etc. My issue I guess is more with the trilogy model. You won't get to those things if you don't lean into it immediately nowadays. Fans and studios can and will be fickle.

We need a Ronin animated movie. Love this story. Top tier TMNT content imo.

It would be cool if they were named after famous musicians.

Bowie, Lennon, Dio and Jackson

I'm imagining those are the 4 famous musicians names April and Casey would agree on.

You reveal the identity of the Last Ronin BEFORE saying spoilers?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/27/2023, 10:43 AM
@ObserverIO - That's not the spoiler. The Last Ronin has been out for ages and it's common knowledge that the title refers to Mikey.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/27/2023, 10:51 AM
@RorMachine - We need a new word for an actual spoiler, then.
The identity of the Last Ronin is an actual story spoiler revealed at the end of the first chapter. Knowing that going in spoils the enjoyment of the narrative. Doesn't matter how much time has passed since the release, it's still a genuine spoiler.

Also, why would his death be considered a spoiler and his identity not? Same amount of time has passed. Unless we're counting in months.

I've been recommending this book to everyone and I always make sure to say "One of the turtles" instead of Michaelangelo. It's not hard to do. And not one of them has said "Oh I already know that it's Michelangelo, that's common knowledge". Because it's not.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/27/2023, 11:00 AM
@ObserverIO - It absolutely does matter how much time has passed. The first issue came out in 2020. And his death is a bigger spoiler than his identity... because his death is a bigger spoiler than his identity! But fine, just to put this to bed I'll go in and make an edit...
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/27/2023, 11:05 AM
@RorMachine - Spoiler used to mean prematurely revealing a narrative reveal.

Now it seems to mean revealing any detail at all within a certain amount of time.

It bugs me.
Sorry for getting on your dick about it, though. You're still my favorite editor. Even more than that new guy and he's a clean slate, lol.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/27/2023, 11:07 AM
@ObserverIO - No worries... after giving it some thought, I actually agree. I knew it was Mikey before I read it, but I wish I didn't!

@ObserverIO - wait till you find out what happens to Uncle Ben, and oh boy you’re never going to guess what Darth Vader’s real name is!
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/28/2023, 4:02 AM
@GetsugaTensho22 - I always recommend that people watch Star Wars in order of release for that very reason. If you watch the prequels first it gives away that major moment. And it is a major moment.

Uncle Ben is different. That's not so much of a narrative reveal as a narrative set-up. You can tell people what happens in things, there's nothing wrong with that. That doesn't really spoil anything. A spoiler is when a narrative function is being spoiled. A surprise. Who did the murder, a twist, a mystery, etc.

Uncle Ben is not a revela, it's a development.

That's another part of the misuse of the word spoiler that bugs me. If I told you that Ant-Man beats Kang in Quantumania, you'd probably consider it a spoiler. It's not.
But if I told you that he is shockingly killed by Wasp who has turned to Kang's side, well then that would be a spoiler. That's something you're not suppose to expect.

Uncle Ben is an inciting incident. Darth Vader is a twist. One is a spoiler, one is not.

"We still don't know very much about these new reptilian warriors (even their names are being kept under wraps)"

The first issue has been out for two days and all of the turtles are named in that issue. On the fourth page. Do y'all do any sort of research before posting or is it just regurgitation from other actual websites?
