THE FLASH Confirmed To Begin Filming In Early 2019 While BIRDS OF PREY Will Start Slightly Sooner

Buried in today's exciting Supergirl movie report was a very interesting nugget about the future of Warner Bros.' DC Films, which confirmed the production start dates for both The Flash and Birds of Prey.

Earlier today, we received word that a big-budget Supergirl movie was indeed in development at Warner Bros., but buried in Deadline's initial report was a few very interesting nuggets about the studio's upcoming DC Films slate.

The report reaffirms that Todd Phillips' Joker will begin filming next month in New York with 3x Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot) starring the title role. 2x Academy Award-winner Robert De Niro (The Irishman), Primetime Emmy-nominee Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Marc Maron (Glow), Golden Globe-winner Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), and Josh Pais (Ray Donovan) round out the cast. It's slated to hit theaters on October 4, 2019.

Production on Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey, which will feature the return of Academy Award-nominee Margot Robbie (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) as Harley Quinn, has been slated to begin in January 2019 and while a release date has not been set, the studio is likely eyeing a 2020 release date. The film has been rumored to feature DC heroines Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya, and a young Cassandra Cain as well as Batman villain Black Mask. ComicBookMovie's Mark Cassidy also recently shared an exclusive update on who WB may be interested in casting for two of the lead roles.

The Flash, which will star Ezra Miller in the title role as Barry Allen, has now been confirmed to commence production in February 2019 and is also presumably looking at a potential 2020 release date. Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will be helming the long-awaited solo feature with a script from Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword). In addition to Miller, Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup are expected to feature as Iris West and Henry Allen, respectively. Fellow Justice Leaguers Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman 1984) and Ray Fisher (Cyborg) have also been rumored to appear, but the status on both is uncertain at best.

DHD also provides a small update on The Batman, but only mention that director Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) is still hard at work on the project. It's not much, but the fact that it's in active development does seemingly suggest that it could and likely will also roll cameras sometime next year.

Warner Bros. has already booked four release dates in 2020 - February 14, April 3, June 5, and July 24 - so, expect to see Birds of Prey, The Flash, The Batman, and/or a yet-to-be-named fourth film land on one of these dates.

As for the rest of the confirmed Worlds of DC slate, James Wan's Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), hits theaters this Christmas while David F. Sandberg's Shazam!, starring Zachary Levi (Chuck), hits theaters in April 2019. Gadot then reunites with Patty Jenkins for Wonder Woman 1984, which is due out in theaters November 2019.

Ezra Miller was one of the most annoying parts of 'Justice League' imo. The character needs a revamp.

@Erik10101 - yeah I hated his character. The only "fun" character in Justice League, imo, was Aquaman.

@Erik10101 - Agreed :(
What Jesse Eisenberg was to Lex Luthor in BvS, Ezra Miller was to Barry Allen in Justice League.

I’m hoping the new directors can make him more likeable, Ezra can be a good actor and The Flash is a fantastic character.

@Erik10101 - I think Ezra Miller is fantastic, but they only used him to dispense jokes and forced social awkwardness.

@Erik10101 - Or they just need to show a serious side to him.

@Erik10101 - I agree and it’s a shame bc he’s actually an incredible actor when given proper material but they clearly wanted their version of Spider-Man to artificially inject humor into JL

@Erik10101 - Ezra looked like he went to the LaVar Ball school of running 😂😂😂

Not sure how I feel about the Flash. Heard Game Night was good, so that's a good mark for the director's, and they did the first draft of the Homecoming script, which was a movie I really liked.

However, I still really disliked Ezra Miller's take on the character in Justice League so I'm not excited to see more of him and the development loopholes this film went through has got me nervous.

@MrDandy - based on how they did Game Night, I'd say they're a solid choice (kinda like the dude who did Homecoming, which makes sense)

They did two things that are hard to do when making a brand new comedy
1. Make you like mostly unlikable characters
2. Leave hints of a unique filmmaking style in a comedy

Hopefully that rolls over, especially now that I'm aware of so much Ezra Miller dislike on here

Except in Injustice, Harley has literally never been a Bird of Prey, but whatever. Gotta milk the cow and give teenyboppers what they want. Especially all those girls who don't know any better and see Harley as some form of inspiration.

I've read every single Birds issue and I love the comic, but my excitement will highly depend on the casting. Margot makes a good Harley, I'll give her that, but I also need a believable Helena and Dinah. The latter is the best female karate master on the planet. If they make her as believable in a fight as Danny in Iron Fist, I'm out. Same goes for Cassandra, who even if in her teens, is even deadlier. Also, they should have brought in Katana, completely under used in Suicide Squad.

I have the feeling Warner is on the right track finally with the DCEU! Can't wait for Reeve's Batman and actually curious about The Flash (Game Night was suprisely good) and Birds of Prey, even with Harley Quinn in the team
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 8/6/2018, 4:59 PM
@Oskir - I have a good feeling about Aquaman, Shazam, Wonder Woman 1984, and Reeves’ Batman (if it ever happens)

The 20 spin-offs centered on supporting characters with either mediocre or unknown directors and writers is what has me worried.

At least 2018 and 2019 should be great.
Oskir
Oskir - 8/6/2018, 5:03 PM
@ELAYEM - Yeah I agree, that's why I hope we will get Green Lantern Corps in 2021 and a Man of Steel sequel instead of an Harley Quinn or Black Adam without Shazam movie
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 8/6/2018, 5:13 PM
@Oskir - Yeah man agreed.
A Superman sequel with a talented director is what I’m dying to see most. Henry Cavill could be a perfect Superman, he just hasnt been given the chance yet.

Also from a business standpoint I dont understand why DC/WB is releasing and planning like 20 individual solo movies, like if they’re successful they’ll have to wait in line like 10 years to get a sequel.
After 6 years and 8 movies Wonder Woman will be the only movie to actually get a sequel in the DCEU.

@ELAYEM - He already is a perfect Superman. He's, hands down, my favorite character in the DC Films Cinematic Universe so far. I wish we got a proper return in "Justice League". I saw his arc in "Batman v Superman" as reminiscent of George Bailey in "It's A Wonderful Life" where the villain convinces him that the world would be better off without him, and he finds the reason for living when it seems too late. I believed, and the trailers suggested (in the few scenes he was in) that "Justice League" would be where he wakes up to strike at his friends not yet realizing that he isn't in that dark place he was, and he looks back on all that he has been through, and how bad things are with the threat of Steppenwolf, and he embraces it with joy in his heart because he is alive again. The studio did a great disservice by trying to "fix" "Justice League". Hopefully they will make up for that by releasing the Snyder Cut and giving Henry Cavill another Superman film. He more than deserves it.
