The Oscar winner talks more about his role as Odin in Kenneth Branagh's godly film Thor

While promoting his latest movie, Wolfman, Anthony Hopkins talked about his initial meeting with Kenneth Branagh regarding the role of Odin in Marvel's Thor.

"He said, 'Would you take the [Thor] script and read it and see what you think? And if you'd like to play Odin,'" Hopkins recalled about their first get together over coffee, "I felt he was a very, very smart man, very bright and compassionate and well rounded."

This is the first time Hopkins is working with Branagh, though he had worked with Branagh's wife, Emma Thompson twice before.

"I'm a big Ken Branagh [fan]. I think he's an extraordinary guy, a wonderful actor and a terrific director. He's one of the easiest guys to be with. He doesn't shout or scream. He just is very gentle with everyone. He believes in his actors. He needs them to act, and he'll direct in a strong way, but he leaves it to you. Whatever you want, he gives it to you."

Production is now underway for the highly anticipated Asgardian tale that will introduce mainstream audiences to Marvel characters based in a larger fantasy world than previous films. Hopkins seems to understand the scope of the film and how much Marvel is banking on it. "[Thor's] a really big one, a really big movie," he commented.

So how does the Oscar winner hope to appear on film, portraying the ruler of the realm of Asgard and father to both the God of Thunder, Thor (Chris Helmsworth) and God of Evil, Loki (Tom Hiddleston):

"I hope I look like God."

Thor is scheduled to be released May 6, 2011.

I was skeptical at first, but I think he's a good fit. This cast has turned out to be astronomical.

Awesome! I was watching The Worlds fastest Indian last week and the man is a [frick]ing genius actor. He hams it up sometimes too(Dracula, Legends Of The Fall) but when he turns it on their is no one better. I hope he plays Odin a bit different than we are probably expecting him to...

Hopkins is a quality actor so I'm confident that he'll do an amazing job as Odin! Man, I cant wait until they start showing some images of this movie...

On a seperate note, finally got around to seeing Sherlock Holmes today - brilliant movie! :)

Yes, didn't really like Instinct too much but The Edge is one of the most under rated movies ever I think, class.

Josh, did you really think so? I really liked it up to a certain point and then it just lost me.

ROR: I have to admit that it was a little hit and miss in places and perhaps a bit too long but overall, I really enjoyed it! What was it about the movie you didnt like?

I've been an Anthony Hopkins fan since seeing "A Bridge Too Far" as a kid.

This movie is shaping up nicely ,great cast, and a fantastic director who seems to really be respecting the source material. Can't wait

It just didn't hold my attention after a while. I liked RDJ, and all the initial characterization was very good, then it just turned into a predictable action movie, which to be honest I knew it would with a hack like Ritchie at the helm.

Did you not like Instinct that much because you actually read Ishmael? I know it wasn't really based on the book, but you could see it's influence there and that kind of put me off.

Hopkins is awesome when he is subdued...he has at times hammed it up but I do not know if anyone in this great cast brings the reputation that he does, besides the director.

out of all the good casting choices marvel have made, i believe this one is, quietly, the best so far. i can't wait for this movie.

Hopkins is a class act. He will bring strength to this movie and will definitely help draw in the non CBM crowd.

@Ror-The Edge was great. I'm down for anything written by David Mamet.

Nah Billy, never read that..I just didn't really dig the movie. Cuba Gooding annoys me at the best of times with his "wide eyes means Im emoting" acting, but then, It just bored me! maybe I should give it another go.

No... I don't see a need for that. It wasn't that great a movie where a second viewing would be beneficial. Ishmael was a great book, it really has nothing to do with the movie other than some themes that Hopkins character uses from it. The "Taker" mentality specifically.

Multi, 'The Edge' is one of my favorite movies EVER! 'What one man can do another can do!' And Hopkins is such a fantastic actor I could sit and listen to him read the phone book.

Thor is going to be EPIC, I can just feel it. I'm serious, there is an odd voice just screaming it in my brain, "Thor will be EPIC!" I'm strangely comforted by it ;)

This is going to be the best of the single hero movies. Ironman 1 was great, but as stoaked as I am to see 2 I don't see myself being as pleased with it as I was with the first.

I'm fairly certain Captain America will be awesome as well, but until I hear more about it i'm going to reserve judgement. But I do still have some worries about it.

Thor on the other hand I'm as hyped as possible for. I've been itchin' to see Mjolnir get swung around on some frost giants for some time. I can't imagine a better director and cast for the job. Though I admit, i've seen little of Hemsworth's work, I have full confidence in Branagh. Folks, this is a huge chance for comic book movies to make the leap into genuinely respected cinema.

The acting in Thor will be first class, no doubt. I can only hope the rest of the production will follow suit. If it does, CBM's will be lifted to a higher level, which is what we all want! With modern movie technology, there's no reason why we can't see our childhood heroes take us on the ride we always wanted!
