BOX OFFICE: THOR: THE DARK WORLD To Stay At #1 This Weekend; Passes $400M Worldwide

According to The Wrap, African-American comedy The Best Man Holiday looks set to earn a whopping $35 million in North America this weekend after opening with $10.7 million yesterday. That's well ahead of initial projections, but with Thor: The Dark World not too far behind with $10.4 million, the Marvel Studios blockbuster is still on track to take the #1 spot for the second weekend in a row with a total of somewhere around $40 million. Facing little competition overseas before The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens next week, the Alan Taylor helmed sequel has now passed $400 million worldwide. Gravity meanwhile will earn an additional $6 million over the next couple of days for a domestic total of $235 million, and more than $477 million worldwide.

Marvel’s "Thor: The Dark World" continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s "Thor" and "Marvel’s The Avengers," Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Anthony Hopkins as Odin
Natalie Portman as Jane Foster

Well deserved! Too bad it and everything else is going to get absolutely murdered by Catching Fire(which I might be seeing).

Until Guardians of the Galaxy, I considered Thor to be the biggest risk Marvel took in their cinematic universe. It's good to know that the risk was worth it.

Hunger games will probably hit 100 million for the 1st weekend. As much as I enjoyed TDW it should have been a lot better and longer. My sister says the best man holiday was really disappointing. I'm still thinking uatu the watcher will pop up in the mcu if fox doesn't have him.

Thor isn't hitting anywhere near $650 million, it will finish around $500 million and that's it. No Robert Downey Jnr means most of the average audiences don't give a flying frak for one viewing let alone repeat viewings the way they do for RDJ. The man is the difference between a movie doing well and a movie doing phenomenally well!

oldgreg-you could say the same thing about dc too, they have the same "real world" tone for their films but they did try to change it up with green lantern and it didnt work

It will reach 600 million worldwide. If it doesn't, I'll change my avatar to a DC character or logo.

Oldgreg-i didnt mean to do that,im like studios go with what they think is working for people, for dc its the tone of the nolan films for their films and marvel is going for the overall package of action, humor, romance and drama

Oldgreg-i mean setting it in a real world which zack snyder has said that he wanted to do ,though nolans films are hyperreal because of the bat, and a evaopration machine that doesnt eveaporate the water in your body and man of steel is hyper real too

Thor TDW was thee worst out of the Marvel movies so far. Horrible pacing, corny out of place jokes, weak villain, weak plot. Good god. If they spent more time on developing the main character, villain, or other CB characters the movie would of been much better. But then I guess it wouldnt give Kat Dennings enough time to spout out her horrible one liners and pointless dribble every 5 seconds. Almost walked out of the theatre. Huge dissapointment. Oh, and doesnt Thors hammer weigh like a bazillion tons? Yet he pleaced it with ease on a coat hanger? It's that kind of shit that ruins movies.

Oh, and doesnt Thors hammer weigh like a bazillion tons? Yet he pleaced it with ease on a coat hanger?

Why can't people get around the idea that Thor can control Mjolnir's power? He called the damn thing from London while it was flying in outer space but he can't hang it on a coat rack?

So....how much did Green Lantern earn ? !!!

@jcfrom. I understand where you are coming from. But understand that the humor in the movie was not needed. Did they really have to get into that crappy volvo to go to that apartment. Couldnt he just fly Jane there? The list goes on and on. Remember the rumor that Alan Taylor was fighting with Marvel over the production of the movie. I guarantee it's because marvel said "Hey Alan, anytime there is a serious moment that might bring emotions out in the audience, well, we want you to follow that with a stupid cheesy joke"

@Assassing, what does it matter what Green Lantern earned? The greatest movies ever made were not blockbusters so stfu.

His hammer doesn't way "a billion tons", it has an enchantment that only those worthy may wield it. Weight isn't an issue
