Kenneth Branagh Says ‘Thor’ Filming To Begin In January," & Hints at a Potential Lead

Even though Marvel’s thunder-bearing deity is years away from making his big-screen debut in “Thor,” director Kenneth Branagh is bringing the mighty hammer Mjolnir down on the project.

Despite a delayed 2011 release date, Branagh is hard at work chiseling the landscape for the upcoming superhero film.

“I’m working currently on ‘Thor’ for Marvel and we’re planning that one. We’re having a great time at the moment. We’re in intense pre-production,” Branagh told IGN about the movie’s development, adding that filming will begin in January of next year.

The gap in time between now and January means that Branagh can work on his telefilm series “Wallander,” based on the Henning Mankell series of novels about an existentialist police inspector. Branagh plays the titular Wallander alongside Tom Hiddleston, an actor who may or may not be donning the winged helmet for Marvel’s “Thor.”

“Tom Hiddleston is a great actor and he, amongst a number of others, has been part of the group we’ve spoken to and all that’s still a work in progress,” Branagh said of his “Wallander” co-star’s chances of playing Thor.

Hiddleston certainly has some stiff competition for the leading role — including Alexander Skarsgård, Charlie Hunnam and Josh Hartnett — but perhaps his previous relationship with Branagh will give him a leg up over the competition.

Whether or not Hiddleston lands the part, Branagh is looking forward to working with the actor on another “Wallander” series this summer before diving headfirst into the Marvel property. Interestingly enough, the director finds that there’s something in common between the police inspector and the Norse God.

“Strangely, there’s a weird, pleasing connection between the Swedish ‘Wallander’ and the Nordic ‘Thor,’” he said. “And as I’ve played a lot of Danish Hamlets, I feel as though my Scandinavian trilogy is forming.”

I think the charlie hunman guy has it. There's no way Brannagh would consider this guy for thor. He's messing with us. That is unless he's doing a shazam-like thor. I dont think even the donald blake character is as unassuming as Tom Hiddleston.

ok Guys I did a little fact checking.

Apparently this Hiddleston dude isn't quite as young as I thought. He just has a very boyish face, and of course a very average body type and build

He's 6'2" and 28 years old, but in the pics we are seeing he LOOKS 15 and 5'2 or so.

But I still say he's all wrong for the part. He looks too youthful, and if they put him in a lame muscle suit it will look terrible because of the smallish hands and head.

If he is involved in anyway as Thor in any sense, it will be as Donald Blake which means a "...shazam-like thor."

Didn't we already READ & COMMENT on this damn article?!?!?!?!?!?! Can we move on now??? And didn't we already READ a damn article saying Skarsgard was OUT OF THE GODDAMN RUNNING?!?!?!?!?!?! I mean, there are slow days in news but the day we read the same shit over and over again is more than slow... Oh and the guy in the picture on top... retard. Next thing we'll know is that Mjolnir will be a rubber hammer and that not only Thor will require a helmet but Blake as well. This movie is beggining to make WarZone look oscar worthy. I mean, there's only so much my faith in Branagh can take.

What are you guys talking about? This guy is PERFECT for Thor! This is a dramatic "re-imagining" of the character! Instead of Donald Blake being a doctor (because come on! Most of these big heroes are all doctors or lawyers or heads of huge companies. Completely unrealistic!), he's a slacker who flips burgers by day and fights evil by night! Mjolnir is a big spatula that turns into a hammer when smacked against the grill three times. Loki is an unpleasant co-worker who always tries to make Blake look bad and sucks up to the boss (Odin in disguise). I could go further with this sarcastic silliness, but I don't want this post getting too long.

Shhhhhhhhhh.... don't spill the beans yet!!! Damn, now Branagh'll really have to go with Chuck Norris!
