Waiting for the movie hammer to fall, Thor fans? So are we! Verily!

And we're getting so much closer because now we know who Thor will be facing off against and that's Tom Hiddleston as the trickster Loki!

Marvel Studios announced today Hiddleston has been cast as the villain Loki in the highly anticipated movie "Thor." Kenneth Branagh will direct the film penned by Mark Protosevich and Ashley Miller & Zak Stentz.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce the film. The film will be released in the U.S. on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of super hero: "Thor." This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

"Thor" reunites Hiddleston with Branagh, with whom he worked on the London production of Chekhov's "Ivanov." The talented actor and Branagh also starred together in the BBC miniseries "Wallander."

Hiddleston's credits also include "Othello," in which he starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor at the Donmar Warehouse, and he played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's "The Gathering Storm."

In 2008, Hiddleston was nominated twice for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer – for his role in Othello" and for his role in "Cymbeline." He won the award for the latter.

In addition to "Thor," Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 2" on May 7, 2010, "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011, and "The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

Now we're getting somewhere!!! Notice how they don't say JACK about Donald Blake??? Hopefuly the good doctor will sit this one out!!! If it resembles in any way Disney's Hercules, it's gonna kick ass in live action!!!

My gut is Blake will make a cameo appearance towards the end of the movie, setting up the Avengers crossover. The original script is set almost entirely in Asgard(I'm hoping it stays that way).

Really interested to see how they work Asgard into the current Marvel movie universe. If anyone hears of a site or sites that show concept art for the costumes, hit me up.

Looks like a better choice for Loki than Thor.
Keven, if Thor could be taken down by Fury, there would be no need to have a god, let alone Thor in the Avengers.
If Marvel isn't going to start treating Thor as one of the most powerful Marvel characters, like the way it was originally intended and not like the wimp as in the Hulk vs Thor cartoon,They might as well drop the comic altogether.

joshw24 - Marvel hasn't announced Thor yet. (I'll post as soon as they do)

Keven - "this movie is the one that will need a lot of work to make Avengers not look absolutely ridiculous."

All of you Thor "nay-sayers" crack me up. First off, there wouldn't be an 'Avengers' without Thor. Secondly, how can an alcoholic in a flying tin suit, a 9 ft tall green gamma-radiated monster, and a steroid-induced super-soldier on ice...dressed in the US flag, not look 'absolutely ridiculous' unless a God is added to the mix?

So sweet. And I love how they're calling Captain America The First Avenger... Instead of making films that need prequels they're just starting completely from scratch. I love it!!!

Shaman - I thought of Disney's Hercules while reading that part too! I would have liked a pure Asgard movie with a link to Earth at the end for Avengers but this sounds pretty damn good!

Just due to the fact that they cast a younger, baby faced actor to play the lead, and not a chiseled, veteran actor... I'm going to say that they're going to use the same actor for both Thor and Blake. And yes, they ARE going to use Blake as a vehicle for the character, mark my words. Which, in my opinion, they should!

I saw that. I think I have heard that that battle was actually highly inaccurate. Is that true? Isn't the classic Thor endowed with strength enough to battle Hulk and live?

On another message board someone said that with Thor's belt on, he is fairly equal to Hulk in strength.

Keven - "Odinson has a mancrush on Thor."

That would be a godcrush - not a mancrush...and my replica mjolnir is not a blow-up.

SirJediFrank- Extremely well said. Without youth, it would seem ridiculous. They might as well cast Patrick Warburton as thor and Jerry Seinfeld as Loki!!!

Loki- But why, why would you go against me? *said in a winny seinfeld voice*
Thor- Cause i'm freakin' THOR! AND I FREAKIN' RULE!!!!!!

Howlett04- A pure Asgard movie would have been quite a spectacle but i agree that this concept they're going for sounds even better!!! Branaugh and Marvel are restoring my faith!!!

@Shaman: LMFAO!!! Patrick Warburton as Thor, that would actually make a great parody. Patrick Warburton cracks me up, his voice acting for animations is the best!
