Chris Hemsworth has been playing the MCU's God of Thunder since 2011's Thor, though it was way back in 2009 that the then relative unknown was first cast. Nearly a decade and a half on, the actor will reprise the role in this summer's Thor: Love and Thunder, but could that be it for his stint as this iconic Avenger?
We know Natalie Portman's Jane Foster will transform into the Mighty Thor, and with so much of Phase 4 about passing familiar mantles to new heroes (Captain America and Hawkeye, for example), could the Odinson's story be nearing its end?
Talking to Wired in the video below, Hemsworth suggested the Thor: Ragnarok sequel could mark his final appearance in the MCU. "Well, the last [Marvel movie] I shot was 'Thor: Love and Thunder' and it might be my last Marvel movie, I don't know," he admitted. "It was a wild and fun and wacky experience, as all Taika Waititi movies are."
"Played that character for ten, eleven, years now, and each time it's been new and exciting, and this was no exception to that. It felt very fresh and it felt like we were trying something we hadn't tried before," Hemsworth continued. "I was, in Taika's words, I think a wacky, wild, romantic comedy set in space."
With Thor set to take on a villain called Gorr the God Butcher, we probably shouldn't be surprised that the actor is teasing fans with the possibility that his character might not make it out of this adventure alive. There's also a chance his contract is up, and if we've learned anything from Tom Holland, an actor hinting that they're done with a role just makes fans want to see them more!
We'll see what the future holds in store for Hemsworth's Thunder God, but be sure to check out the full interview with the Thor: Love and Thunder star below:
The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.
Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.
