Mark Ruffalo Says ‘Bruce Banner’/‘Hulk’ Consciousness Is Merging In THOR: RAGNAROK

Hit the jump and check out the latest from Mark Ruffalo as he drops more hints towards the direction that he and Marvel Studios are taking with Bruce Banner and his angry alter-ego when they return ( and potentially merge personalities) in 2017's Thor: Ragnarok.

During a recent interview with Ain’t It Cool News for his latest indie drama, Infinitely Polar Bear, Mark Ruffalo further teased, or speculated about, his return as Bruce Banner, the Incredible Hulk, in Thor: Ragnarok. Though he’s yet to read the script, the actor seems to know where it’s headed.

He's on the run,” assured Ruffalo of the Incredible Hulk’s whereabouts following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. “I think that we carry that through. It's not just a matter of taking himself to some remote place and hiding. Now he's removing himself from humanity altogether. I'm not sure where we're going to head with that, but I'm sure that's probably still very much alive within him.” The two-time Oscar nominated actor then hinted that the two personalities might merge.  “It's very subtle, but the Banner/Hulk consciousness is beginning to meld a little bit,” he teased. “Who decided to leave? Was it Banner or Hulk? It's not really in the [cinematic] mythology of Hulk up until that moment to be that conscious and pro-active. It's interesting, right?” Very!

Mark Ruffalo continued, “Yeah, I think it [will be fun]. I think it's really exciting where we could go with it. Now I feel like we're kind of in No Man's Land. I mean, the comic books have kind of broached the subject, but we're moving away from the traditional Hulk/Banner relationship. We're starting to mess with it a little bit.” As this direction has not been explored previously, he added, “Now we're going to see how far we can push the limits of it before people get sick of it!”

While Mark Ruffalo is hinting here that Bruce Banner’s and the Hulk’s consciousness are merging, the actor previously implied that we might see them split in Thor: Ragnarok. What do you think?
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Anthony Hopkins, and Mark Ruffalo, Thor: Ragnarok is currently being scripted by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle with Taika Waititi set to direct, and the movie scheduled to release in theaters on November 3, 2017.

It would be nice to see a more intelligent, speaking Hulk in the film universe. I think its a natural progression for the character.

So we will finally get a Hulk that can talk (say more than two words per movie) and one that can think. Looks like they have taken my advice by studying the interpretation of Hulk from Avengers EMH

Another Ruffalo interview, another spouting of things he wants or theorizes about without ever following through with them onscreen.

As far as I'm concerned, Banner and Hulk have been melded since day 1. There is almost nothing to indicate any sort of separate personalities/identities.

Don't mean to be THAT guy but didn't he say similar things about the hulk/banner when age of ultron was about to come out?

THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN:

We need some kind of display of the internal and external struggle between Banner and Hilk; whether it be a psychological representation, a physical one or both. Maybe they actually split and then merge again.

As I've said in previous articles, Hulk needs to be less of an object and more of a character. As in, make the Hulk his own, distinct individual. How things stand now, Banner is the character, and Hulk is the object.

Love Mark Ruffalo but can't really trust the guy when he said Banner was having an inner conscious battle with Hulk in AOU

Yeah that happened didn't it? LMFAO

@MattBellissimo That's kind of why I like the 2003 version of the hulk a bit more. At least in terms of a character, it was very clear that the hulk and banner were two different personalities. And was a much more psychological thing, to avoid being associated with that movie Marvel Studios avoided that idea like the plague and only kind of hinted that the hulk was his own separate person. Kind of wish they would go more into it. Maybe in this movie they will.

Wish Marvel could actually get Hulk right

Closest we got was Avengers with the Banner/ Hulk relationship

AOU just turned him into an dumb ape

I would trade everything in Phase 3 (maybe not BP or Strange) for another Hulk solo film with the Leader and She-Hulk involved

Pwease Marvel

One would hope. Both characters have been majorly sidelined in terms of power and development.

@ComicsBornAndBred To be fair that first panel already happened in a Hulk movie. And it was the best scene in that movie.

@PesciGotPepsi
I feel like Phase 3 is making up for the missed opportunities and shortcomings of AOU. Whedon promised a broken Avengers team and we didn't get it for example. Russos will rectify that it seems. Thor 3 is gonna explore the Hulk Banner dynamic like never before.

Civil War is even deconstructing and criticizing the final battles of every film. This gives those supposedly inconsequential battles more significance.

@Mrcool210 true. But I'd like more of that. Want to see more of Banner struggling to keep Hulk at bay within his mind.

Mrcool210 - 12/23/2015, 8:21 AM
@ComicsBornAndBred Same here, that's why I'll defend the 2003 film till the day I die. People really hate on that movie but it really delved into the hulk as a character and was a lot closer to the comics ironically. At least in terms of how the hulk worked in Banners mind. Its funny, we've had too hulk movies on the opposite sides of the xtremes, if we want the perfect Hulk movie we need a good mix of what they tried to do in the 2003 hulk and the 2008 hulk. Too bad General Audiences just want to see Hulk Smash and don't realize what makes the character interesting is the inner turmoil stuff. It's sad really :(
